Artist Tim Bavington has completed a major new sculpture commission adjacent to the W Dallas in Victory Park, near Downtown, Uptown, Turtle Creek, the high-style Design District of Dallas.

The work was a commissioned piece for this site and is titled “Matchbox“ and stands 15 feet high by 34 feet feet wide. Made with steel pipe and automotive paint, “Matchbox” will be a visual translation of “Matchbox” – the song recorded by The Beatles in 1964.

The work was developed by Tim Bavington (NV), La Paloma Fine Art Fabricators (CA), and Mark Moore Fine Art (CA).

Music is the genesis of Tim Bavington’s paintings. Through synthetic polymer paint, Bavington acts as a translator between the aural and the visual as he transforms guitar solos, melodies and bass lines into vertical bands of color. Tracks from bands such as The Darkness, Oasis and The Rolling Stones become vibrant bands of color, and bridge compositional concepts between seemingly unlike disciplines. Although Bavington has a method that designates sound to color and composition, the paintings are not literal translations; they remain open to intuition and decision-making, allowing for a distinct artistic presence.

Tim Bavington (b. 1966, England) received his BFA from the Art Center (CA) before making the permanent move to Las Vegas, where he completed his MFA at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (NV). His work is included in the public collections of Fredrick R. Weisman Collection (CA), Crocker Art Museum (CA), Honolulu Art Museum (HI), Albright-Knox Art Gallery (NY), Creative Artists Agency (CA), Joslyn Art Museum (NE), Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (CA), Portland Art Museum (OR), United Talent Agency (CA), Vivendi Universal (CA), Palm Springs Art Museum (CA), Denver Art Museum (CO), The Museum of Modern Art (NY), Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, Utah State University (UT) and the McNay Art Museum (TX). He has exhibited at LeeAhn Gallery (Daegu), Jack Shainman Gallery (NY), Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard (Paris), Space Gallery (London), Museum of Fine Arts (MA), Laguna Art Museum (CA), Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Buenos Aires, and the Texas Fine Arts Center (TX) among others.

For this newest incarnation of her practice, Rugg has recently re-envisioned maps of countries, states, and cities around the world – all without borders, featuring a staggeringly precise hand-drawn layout with only city names and the names of regions and the missing topographic features as reference points.

In her “Maps”, Kim Rugg re-envisions the topography of various states, countries, continents, and even the world without borders, featuring a staggeringly precise hand-drawn layout with only city names and regions as reference points. In her own sense of abstracted cartography, Rugg redistributes traditional map colors (or eliminates them entirely) in order to nullify the social preeminence given to constructed territories, and highlight the idea that our attention is manipulated to focus on the powerful few instead of the physical many.
Through this visual ruse in the “Maps” Series of works, Rugg critiques the media’s tendency to seduce its viewership through sensation and illusion rather than verisimilitude. A consistent theme throughout all of her work, patterns within the tactics of journalists, broadcasters, historians, and reporters alike are given clarity through Rugg’s purposeful distortion. At first glance, Rugg’s work appears disconnected from our regular lines of communication, but upon closer inspection, her visual subterfuge astutely mimics that of the everyday propagandist.

Rugg received her MFA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art (London). Her work can be seen in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art (D.C.) and the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation (CA), the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (CA), and the Norton Museum (FL), among others. She has been included in exhibitions at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (CA), Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (NY), Galerie Schmidt Maczollek (Cologne), and Nettie Horn Gallery (Manchester), and was the recipient of the Thames and Hudson Prize from the Royal College of Art Society in 2004. She lives and works in London (UK).

‘Nest’ is the title of the latest works by American artist Allison Schulnik. The collection, diverse in material, medium and subject matter, is being presented at the Javier Lopez Frances gallery in Madrid. This personal project will be on view until November 3rd.

Wildfires have swept through California, killing at least 15 people and injuring over 100. With thousands of acres burned and the fires still raging, here’s how you can help those affected by the blazes. We were part of the evacuations ourselves this week as part of the #canyon2fire

Facebook has created exclusive Crisis Response Centers for three of the fires — the Sulphur Fire, the Tubbs Fire and the Atlas Fire.

If you want to volunteer to help, you can let the community of the Crisis Response Center know that you’re looking to participate in volunteer efforts.

The Crisis Response Centers also allow people to start a fundraiser or donate to ongoing fundraisers. They also serve as a resource to view information about the wildfires, including local news reports and updates, as well as photos that other Facebook users in the area are posting of the devastation.

The online centers also allow you to check in, letting your Facebook friends know you’re safe if you’re living in the affected areas, or allow you to make sure that your friends in those areas are safe.

To ensure that you’re contributing to established agencies, you can visit an organization like Charity Navigator or GiveWell, which monitor charities, making it easier to determine where to send your money securely.

The American Red Cross is among established relief organizations that are highly rated by Charity Navigator. The Red Cross is working to provide shelter, food and comfort to those that had to flee their neighborhoods in the affected wildfire areas.

Inspired by Sinatra’s record, the artist’s latest studio work explores the nuances and energy of individual colors. The basis for each painting is a musical composition with a single color in the title: Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze, for instance. Whereas much of Bavington’s previous output delivered color at “full volume,” many of the new paintings reflect a lowering of chromatic intensity, as well as a broader tonal range and more limited palette. Morgan Lehman is delighted to present these works in Tim Bavington’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.

Tim Bavington (b. 1966, England) received his BFA from ArtCenter College of Design before moving to Las Vegas, where he completed his MFA at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Bavington’s work is included in numerous public collections, including The Museum of Modern Art (New York), Fredrick R. Weisman Collection, Crocker Art Museum, Honolulu Art Museum, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Joslyn Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Portland Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Palm Springs Art Museum, Denver Art Museum, Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art at Utah State University, as well as the McNay Art Museum in Texas. His largest work to date, Pipe Dream, is a major public sculpture commissioned by the Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas and is based on the 1942 Aaron Copeland classic, Fanfare for the Common Man.
