Though formally varied, these artists and thier works frequently manipulate the roles of individual elements arranged in diverse visual populations. This often unearths unexpected patterns as the relationship between the part and the whole, the individual and the group, is explored.

Reflecting a natural attraction to popular culture and the day-to-day, their work regularly incorporates the use of common references and source material – the internet, Google, television, Flickr, catalogs, books, eBay, and Craigslist have all been the source of the data used in these artists works. The final compositions are exhibited as art objects, such as photographic prints and video installations, while others exist in a real-time software context.

All in all, these artist harvest this data as their palette to generate and reconfigure masses of communal material to present new perspectives on the familiar.

Mark Moore Fine Art is very pleased to let you know that the inaugural installation of the Nancy and Rich Kinder building at the Museum of Fine Art Houston opened to the public on November 21, 2020. Included in this inaugural installation is the thematic exhibition “LOL!”, on view in gallery 313 which includes “Untitled Tattoo Flash” by Okay Mountain which was acquired by the museum with funds from Mark and Hilarie Moore in 2016.

The Nancy and Rich Kinder Building is dedicated to the Museum’s international collections of modern and contemporary art. The soaring spaces feature displays that span media encompassing painting and sculpture, craft and design, video, and immersive installations.

“LOL!” features art that uses humor as a strategy. Now-classic sculptures, photographs, and videos by Claes Oldenburg, Tony Oursler Sandy Skoglund and William Wegman are on view, along with surprising works such as Grupo Mondongo’s “Calavera 4 (Skull 4)”, with its humorously re-contextualized sociopolitical, pop-culture, and art historical references; improbable furniture prototypes by the Campana Brothers and KAWS; and Yoshitomo Naras untitled drawings of cute, mischievous girls.

THE CONVERSATION Newest Episode on BBC Features Artist Zemer Peled

Women making art from clay

The Conversation

Pottery is one of the oldest and most widespread decorative arts and has enjoyed rising popularity in recent years. At the same time, ceramics are increasingly significant as contemporary art. Kim Chakanetsa talks to two ceramicists about sprigging, drying, firing and smashing; commercial collaborations; and getting their pieces in museums.

Hitomi Hosono is a Japanese ceramicist whose delicate work sits in the British Museum and V&A. She’s also collaborated with the world-famous Wedgewood pottery manufacturer to make jasperware vases. Her ceramics, with a chalk-like finish and gold embellishments, are rooted in both Japanese and European traditions. Inspired by the intricacy of plants, leaves and flowers her pots seem to sway in the breeze and grow.

Israeli ceramicist Zemer Peled took up pottery as part of therapy after a break-up in her 20s and now exhibits at galleries and museums around the world. Her work examines the beauty and brutality of the natural world. She makes large and small-scale sculptures and installations from thousands of porcelain shards – and has a growing collection of hammers!

The Everson Museum Acquires An Important Dirk Staschke Work For Their Permanent Collection

Dirk Staschke, Vanitas Vase Number 5, Ceramic, 16x11x11, 2018

We are honored to have “Vanitas vase number 5” by artist DIRK STASCHKE taken into the collection of the Everson Museum.

Being a studio artist isn’t easy. I used to tell my students, “If you can do anything else, do it.” For thirty-one years everything else has been secondary to my artistic practice, except my family. Covid created my first real “break” from making. On occasion, in times of reflection, I have wondered what if I had done something else? In all those years there are rare moments of true affirmation.

Originally opening in 1897 as the Syracuse Museum of Fine Art, the Everson is a museum of firsts. It was the first museum to dedicate itself to the collection of American art, to create a permanent collection of ceramics, to collect video art, to create a docent program and to hire the now internationally-known architect I.M. Pei to design its building, a sculptural work of art in its own right. The Everson is home to approximately 11,000 works of art: American paintings, sculpture, drawings, video, graphics and one of the largest holdings of international ceramics in the nation.
