With surgical blades and a meticulous hand, Kim Rugg (b. 1963, Canada) dissects and reassembles newspapers, stamps, comic books, cereal boxes and postage stamps in order to render them conventionally illegible. The front page of the LA Times becomes neatly alphabetized jargon, debunking the illusion of its producers’ authority as much as the message itself. Through her re-appropriation of medium and meaning, she effectively highlights the innately slanted nature of the distribution of information as well as its messengers. Rugg has also created hand-drawn works alongside wallpaper installations, both of which toy with authenticity and falsehood through subtle trompe l’oeil. In her maps, Rugg re-envisions the topography of various states, countries, continents, and even the world without borders, featuring a staggeringly precise hand-drawn layout with only city names and regions as reference points. In own sense of abstracted cartography, Rugg redistributes traditional map colors (or eliminates them entirely) in order to nullify the social preeminence given to constructed territories, and highlight the idea that our attention is manipulated to focus on the powerful few instead of the physical many.

Bob Roberts (1946-2022)

The tattoo and fine art community lost a pioneer today. Bob Roberts‘ art, tattoos and music had the raw power of a strong individual, who never wavered from his own perspective.

In the art community, Bob Roberts was known for his intense watercolors on paper – creating dense, fanatically detailed compositions that draw from traditional American tattoo flash, Tibetan thangkas paintings, and outlaw motorcycle imagery. His most recent works are inspired by artists like John Altoon, Phillip Guston, H.C. Westerman, and comic legends Rick Griffin and R. Crumb, as well as surf culture, and classical Chinese and Japanese painting. 

His enigmatic icons combined humorous meditations on violence, sexuality, and beauty, and were rendered with a sophisticated mastery of materials. Roberts challenged himself with a system of irreversible marks, as opposed to the corrections and over-painting of Western traditions, but with the simultaneous precision of his tattoo-artist hand. His work was the foundation of the much-acclaimed traveling museum exhibition “Eye Tattooed America” in 1993, and has been featured in numerous shows focused on mark-making and American Pop Culture.

Roberts’ experiences as a musician, biker, and iconoclast flavored his personal work. As a saxophonist, he was part of the milieu of Frank Zappa, in addition to playing with Ruben and the Jets, Hot Tuna, the New York Dolls, and the Offs. He first started professionally tattooing in 1973, while concurrently making his artwork, and is the founder of the famed Spotlight Tattoo in Los Angeles. His paintings have largely enjoyed an underground reputation as a living legend among the international body art community.

For twenty years, Los Angeles painter Robert Standish had been abstracting reality by altering his own powerful and moving photorealistic paintings of daily life. Seven years ago, Standish shifted away from constructing lifelike replicas of the world, and into an investigation of the unconscious unknown through abstraction. His move into an Abstract Expressionist “wet-on-wet” technique developed in tandem with his interests in cosmology and topography, in addition to psychological theory – namely, Dr. Carl Jung’s notion and analysis of the human psyche.

In his newest work, Standish revisits the essential element of his early style of photorealistic painting, namely, a photo reference, but through his more recent lens of abstraction. Fed up with biased news reporting, Standish sources his imagery from top U.S. and world news stories; often selecting photos from the Internet and various social media platforms associated with polarizing content. By unifying his disparate techniques, he gradually manipulates the palette and texture of the original image to change the representation of its featured subject – and subsequently, the viewer’s interpretation of it. Transcendence being a consistent theme of his practice, Standish’s newest work is true to his rejection of the finite, and his proclivity for the universal.

Robert Standish is an American painter living and working in Los Angeles whose organic process reveals the emotive effects of color, shape, and texture. Inspired by the color-field painters and Abstract Expressionism, Standish’s free-flowing use of paint is his way of exploring abstraction and transcendence. His works can be found in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, JP MORGAN CHASE, The Weisman Foundation, Louis K. Meisel, Larry and Marilyn Fields, Patricia Arquette, Norwest Venture Partners and BRYANT/ STIBEL, along with numerous other acclaimed collections. Standish’s paintings have been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums, including two recent group shows at the Carnegie Art Museum.

Merging found autobiographical photographs with viciously gestural painting, Joshua Dildine confronts the subject of conventional recollection and familial structure. A fixation shared by society at large, the contemplation of past events and relationships ultimately shapes our psychology moving forward – as a flicker of nostalgia, shame, or glee can be activated by a single sensory cue. With a purposeful cognizance, Dildine mines these memories for the underlying traits that forge our shared humanity: the humor found in the compromising, the endearment found in the aggravating, or the conflict found in the absent. His painterly swaths are as visceral as the family photos they conceal, his vivid palette alluding to the glaring absurdity of our incessant self-analysis and contemplation of the past. 

In his most recent body of work, Dildine embellishes elements or patterns within the original image in order to create a farcical confrontation with the past – a perspective that is both critical and celebratory. Through this carefully disjointed lens, Dildine creates experiences that are at once present and bygone, and whimsically harnesses nature of our being.

Dildine (b. 1984, CA), received his MFA from Claremont Graduate University (CA). He has been featured in group exhibitions in Oakland, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Murfreesboro, as well as the Frederick Weisman Museum of Fine Art (CA). His work is included in the public collection of the Sweeney Art Gallery, University of California Riverside (Riverside, CA), The Frederick Weisman Museum of Fine Art (CA), The Honolulu Art Museum, and The Museum of Art and History (Lancaster, CA). He was also the recipient of the 2010 Claremont Graduate University Award. The artist lives and works in Fresno, CA.
