Previewed: DAVID RATHMAN “Winner Take All” – An Exclusive ARTSY Online Exhibition Opening January 6, 2022

David Rathman, They Always Want To See My Bad Boy, 2021
Watercolor on paper (unframed)
26 × 39 in / 66 × 99.1 cm

Mark Moore Fine Art proudly presents WINNER TAKE ALL, a solo exhibition of recent watercolor paintings by gallery artist David Rathman. Heralded for his critical analysis of masculine iconography, the artist has gravitated towards maverick characters such as athletes, rock stars, race car drivers, and ranchers. After numerous years of exploring the concept of the American cowboy, Rathman’s subject matter is slated to evolve after this last look into the mysterious, testosterone-driven psyche of the American West.

In a monochromatic sepia-toned palette, Rathman’s work depicts ghostly silhouettes of ambiguous gunslingers in Stetsons riding their trusty steeds across a barren landscape. Reminiscent of old shoddy film stills, the loose qualities of his painting technique evoke a shadowy nostalgia culled from pooling whiskey on an aging oak tabletop. Lonely as they seem, these romanticized figures of the past seem at home within the environments that echo their existence; hazy and ephemeral through the eyes of the viewer. Oftentimes these human mirages fuse into their backgrounds, as if struggling for sovereignty from their dusty tension-filled environments. The effect is one of haunting wistfulness for the historical narratives associated with “manifest destiny,” or for the fictionalized storytelling of Hollywood cinema as remembered by a young child. Rendered in the contrasting depth and frailty of watercolor, Rathman’s cowboy vignettes grapple with notions of sexuality, faith, mortality and melancholy.

DAVID RATHMAN (b. 1958, Choteau, MT) received a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1982. While primarily a painter, Rathman has produced limited edition books and prints, and has created several original films.

Recent solo exhibitions include “Somewhere Between,” Weinstein Gallery, Minneapolis, MN; “Up to You, Down to Me,” Morgan Lehman Gallery, New York, NY; “Stand By Your Accidents,” Orlando Museum of Art, Orlando, FL and Rochester Art Center, Rochester, MN; “Hope I’m Never That Wrong Again,” Mark Moore, Culver City, CA; and “Let’s See What Stirs,” Larissa Golden Gallery, New York, NY. Recent group exhibitions include “TXTD,” Salisbury University Art Gallery, Salisbury, MD; “Box(e),” Jerome Zodo Contemporary, Milan, Italy; “Ultrasonic V, It’s Only Natural,” Mark Moore Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; “Every Man’s Life is a Fairytale,” Larissa Goldston Gallery, New York, NY; and “The Old, Weird America,” Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX. His work is in numerous public and private collections including The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis MN; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and The Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA. David Rathman lives and works in Minneapolis.

Getty Research institute Adds Eric Orr Archive

The Eric Orr documentary archive and papers are now part of Getty Special Collections

ERIC ORR
Without Red, 1983
Oil, blood, and chinese hair on canvas with lead frame and gold leaf
29 × 24 × 1 1/2 in / 73.7 × 61 × 3.8 cm

The photographs, slides, and negatives of paintings, sculptures, and fountains by contemporary artist Eric Orr have recently been acquired by the Getty Research Institute (GRI). The archive also includes schematic drawings and plans for Orr’s public works, as well as ephemera, clippings, and administrative files that detail his life and practice.

Eric Orr (1939-1998) is a key figure of the Light and Space movement in Southern California. Born in 1939 in Covington, Kentucky, Orr graduated from the Kentucky Military Institute in 1958 and spent his early years traveling across the United States and Cuba. He briefly attended the University of Cincinnati in the early 1960s, where he produced his first sculpture, Colt .45, a work later known as Saturday Night Special. The work featured a mounted pistol facing a chair; viewers could sit and control the pistol via a foot pedal. Orr participated in civil rights protests in Mississippi in 1964 before relocating to Los Angeles in 1965, where he began to produce performances, sound art, and perceptual installations, using the elemental qualities of silence, sound, darkness, and light as material. Among these works was Zero Mass (1972-1973), an immersive 38-foot-long installation made of paper, where up to five people could enter a dark oval chamber and, after 10 to 12 minutes, experience altered vision from the lack of spatial perception. Developing alongside both Southern California conceptual art and the perceptual-based installations commonly associated with Light and Space art, Orr’s work spanned a variety of artistic practices that challenged the definition of artmaking while also incorporating a broad range of cultural references, including space icons found in ancient religions and cultures, Egyptian symbolism, and Buddhist spiritualism. From the 1970s onward, Orr created a diverse body of atmospheric monochrome paintings using airbrushing and oil paint, wall-mounted sculptures, and public artworks which incorporated a variety of elements including fire, water, gold, volcanic ash, meteorite dust, and his own blood.Orr participated in a number of international exhibitions during his life, including documenta VII (1982), the Sydney Biennale (1986), and the Venice Biennale (1986). His work can be found in many public and private collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Orr died in Venice, California, in 1998.

The archive will be open to researchers and is among numerous archives at the GRI related to the Light and Space movement and Southern California artists and curators, making it the ideal home for his legacy.

BEN WEINER “MUNDILLOS” – An Exclusive ARTSY Online Exhibition

Mark Moore Fine Art is proud to present Mundillos, a solo show of new paintings by New York-based artist Ben Weiner. Weiner’s recent paintings reference his family’s mulitethnic fiber craft traditions, including his grandmother’s Puerto Rican Mundillo lace weavings and his mother’s patchwork quilts. In geometric abstractions made up of richly painted, hyperreal textures, Weiner builds upon these traditions, blending them with his own painterly lexicon. The word “Mundillos” translates to “little worlds” in Spanish, a term that bears kinship to Weiner’s practice of painting domestic subjects to explore a connection to something larger than ourselves.

DANIEL CANOGAR “Dinamo” at Expo Dubai (1 October 2021 – 31 March 2022)

DANIEL CANOGAR’S Dinamo at Expo Dubai 1 October 2021 – 31 March 2022
©Studio Daniel Canogar

Daniel Canogar‘s work captures the public’s imagination and stimulates reflection. Because, as he says, “we are distracted all the time”. The raw materials for his art are our everyday experiences with technology, from information overload to obsolescence.

Dinamo, one of the most ambitious projects by Studio Daniel Canogar to date, is a site-specific audiovisual project designed for the Spanish Communication Pavilion in Dubai, for Expo Dubai 2021. It has been done in collaboration with the Spanish sound designer and composer Francisco López.

The artwork, suspended in the middle of the main pavilion and surrounded by a descendent spiral hallway, consists of three sculptural screens shaped like interlaced loops that feature a generative audiovisual content through the interaction of the visitors and the railing along the ramp. The more contact the rail detects, the more dynamic and colorful the content of Dinamo’ screens will be. Similarly, the sound will be more intense when interaction is higher. This way, the activation of the artwork is totally in the hands of the visitors.

Short videos of each of Canogar’s works can be viewed in VIMEO at: https://bit.ly/2YrQQoi
