Ben Charles Weiner
Gel Monochrome Variation 3, 2016
18 × 18 in; 45.7 × 45.7 cm (paper size)
Archival pigment print
Edition of 20 + 2AP

By photographing paint and luxurious ephemera at close range, then using the resulting image as his subject, BEN CHARLES WEINER creates works that pose a confusion of object, subject and medium. Weiner’s paintings harness the idolatrous fetishistic desire of consumer culture, the fashion industry, and the art world. Thus, his paintings self-critically describe the duality of their own identity as both transcendent creation and commercial item. Likewise, all of the themes and references in the paintings reinforce their status as consumer/art objects. Roland Bathes’ application of Freud’s concept of “the uncanny” to landscape photography is the pertinent reference.

Weiner (b. 1980, Burlington, VT) received his BA from Wesleyan University (CT). He also studied under Mexican muralist José Lazcarro at Universidad de las Americas (Mexico) and has worked closely with artists Jeff Koons, Kim Sooja and Amy Yoes as an assistant. He has exhibited his work widely across the United States and in Mexico with solo shows in Los Angeles, New York and Puebla, and group exhibitions in Chicago, New York, Miami, New Haven, Ridgefield, Los Angeles and Riverside. His paintings can be found in the Sammlung/Collection (Germany), the Progressive Collection (OH), and the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation Collection (CA). The artist lives and works in New York City.

ROBERT STANDISH “Aspect Dawning” Closing Sunday

larger-7

Robert Standish, Acrylic on Canvas / 36 × 24 in; 91.4 × 61 cm

Mark Moore Fine Art is very pleased to present an exclusive online exhibition of the recent “Rhythmic Series” works by acclaimed emerging Los Angeles Artist ROBERT STANDISH titled “Aspect Dawning“, on view through February 24, 2019.

Please find the link to this exhibition published on WSI Magazine:

https://wsimag.com/art/47591-robert-standish

For twenty years, Los Angeles painter Robert Standish had been abstracting reality by altering his own powerful and moving photorealistic paintings of daily life. Seven years ago, Standish shifted away from constructing lifelike replicas of the world, and into an investigation of the unconscious unknown through abstraction. His move into an Abstract Expressionist “wet-on-wet” technique developed in tandem with his interests in cosmology and topography, in addition to psychological theory – namely, Dr. Carl Jung’s notion and analysis of the human psyche.

This exhibition is available for you to view now at:

https://www.artsy.net/show/mark-moore-fine-art-robert-standish-aspect-dawning

DETAIL IMAGE: Acrylic on Canvas / 36 × 24 in; 91.4 × 61 cm

Now in “Aspect Dawning,” Standish revisits the essential element of his early style of photorealistic painting, namely, a photo reference, but through his more recent lens of abstraction. Fed up with biased news reporting, Standish sources his imagery from top U.S. and world news stories; often selecting photos from the Internet and various social media platforms associated with polarizing content. By unifying his disparate techniques, he gradually manipulates the palette and texture of the original image to change the representation of its featured subject – and subsequently, the viewer’s interpretation of it. Transcendence being a consistent theme of his practice, Standish’s newest work is true to his rejection of the finite, and his proclivity for the universal.

Robert Standish, Acrylic on Canvas / 36 × 48 in; 91.4 × 121.9 cm

Robert Standish is an American painter living and working in Los Angeles whose organic process reveals the emotive effects of color, shape, and texture. Inspired by the color-field painters and Abstract Expressionism, Standish’s  free-flowing use of paint is his way of exploring abstraction and transcendence. His works can be found in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, JP MORGAN CHASE, The Weisman Foundation, Louis K. Meisel, Larry and Marilyn Fields, Patricia Arquette, Norwest Venture Partners and BRYANT/ STIBEL, along with numerous other acclaimed collections. Standish’s paintings have been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums, including two recent group shows at the Carnegie Art Museum.

EDNA is not a long lost relative, or partner, though she is the love of my life.” says artist Joseph Rossano.

“She is also the love of many of our lives: she is, in many ways, our mother earth. “EDNA” is an acronym for environmental DNA (eDNA), the biological trace of organisms that have been present in surrounding water, soil, or air. Instead of finding and capturing organisms in open water, or even a shovelful of earth, then individually extracting their DNA , we can isolate and, en masse, read DNA left behind in the environment itself, using bioinformatics tools to identify the individual organisms from which the DNA was sloughed.”

These works, published in association with Davis Editions, are wonderful examples of the artists best work. Davis Editions uses archival pigment inks and 100% cotton rag paper to create museum-quality prints that are fully archival. Each of these works is a limited edition of just twenty with two artists proofs. Once an edition is sold out, those prints are no longer available. Each print is hand-stamped and numbered on the back by Davis Editions and validated with a certificate of authenticity. The certificate includes pertinent information about the print including publication date, print number, and edition size, and is signed and dated by the publisher.

Rossano continues, “The biological equivalent of the tip of an iceberg, these fragments of being quite literally expose the DNA of previous visitors, extinct or extant, invasive or endemic and their ecological milieus across time. DNA can be extracted from an ice core and used to identify a mastodon as well as the flora (and their pollen) through which it lumbered. These organisms have not lived in this world for 10,000 years and yet their genetic remnants – a record of their individual natural histories – reveal a place in the past that was, previously unrecognizable and unreachable, even while held in one’s hand.”

“My EDNA works pay homage to place. Water, soil and air nurtured the forests from which each artwork is constructed, hosting many increasingly rare species. Reflecting the concept of eDNA, I depict animals that lived in these forests, exposing them on the environment’s salvaged remnants – plywood, cedar, ash, tar and more.”

“EDNA”, as perceived through our five and more senses, is a sampling of organisms and their daily life, imagery, material and place, united in composing a much larger narrative of life – all life.

Joseph Rossano’s exhibition EDNA conveys a deep admiration for nature, science and history. While the interdisciplinary systems of the natural world are highlighted through his works, Rossano’s show serves as a sampling of different organisms and their connections to one another. Through a wide range of materials, Rossano composes a broad narrative that taps into the viewer’s senses and demands a profound consideration for the vastness of life.

On View Now: New Work by Jimi Gleason at Mark Moore Fine Art

1149640_10151604586698785_1089172260_o

View the exclusive ARTSY online exhibition of new work by LA artist JIMI GLEASON on view now at the following link:

https://www.artsy.net/show/mark-moore-fine-art-jimi-gleason

Jimi Gleason’s reflected and light transmitted paintings emphasize seductive surfaces, nontraditional materials and the luminescent use of silver deposit to catalyze intimate reflection on the mechanics of perception.

“In Gleason’s deliciously unnatural abstractions, the devil is not in the details only because diabolical beauty spills so profusely from every nook and cranny.  His densely textured surfaces are a cornucopia of unimaginable delights.”

– Art Critic DAVID PAGEL (Los Angeles Times)

gleason_sg26b_img_6220

Jimi Gleason has spent his career exploring the reflective possibilities of a painterly surface. “By using an iridescent surface coat, I have managed to create visual spaces that respond to both the play of light and the location of the viewer,” he says. Mixing nontraditional materials such as silver deposit with acrylic paints, Gleason’s surfaces are highly reactive to light and shifts in the viewer’s position.

To achieve his luminous surfaces, Gleason utilizes industrial materials – silver nitrate to be exact – in a process he’s been investigating and applying for over a decade. Performing an act of sheer alchemy, Gleason treats acrylic-coated canvases with a chemical mixture, which he then sprays with silver nitrate solution, transforming the surfaces into sterling sheets of metal.

His silver deposit surfaces act as enigmatic mirrors that are activated by the viewer and the environment they are situated in. Light, color and form are injected into the paintings via the external world – through this movement, Gleason hopes to induce a meditative experience for his viewers.

Jimi Gleason was born and raised in Southern California. He graduated with a BA in Fine Art from UC Berkeley in 1985, later moving to New York. Upon his return to California, Jimi worked as a studio assistant for renowned abstract painter, Ed Moses.

Gleason is now the subject of considerable curatorial and critical applause. His work is exhibited in significant public institutions, including the Armand Hammer Museum, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Seattle Art Museum, the Tucson Museum of Art and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation. The artist’s paintings are actively collected by a growing number of major public and private collections around the world.

Focus On: Mark Moore Fine Art – An ARTSY Feature

lil_5088 copy

Check out the following article just recently published on ARTSY:

“Success Story: Mark Moore Fine Art”

Read on ARTSY: pages.artsy.net/mark-moore-success-story

The feature is a very insightful look into the past, present, and future of Mark Moore Fine Art.

Since 1984, Mark Moore has been a leading champion of emerging and mid-career contemporary artists in Southern California. Until 2016, he was the founder and principal of Mark Moore Gallery – an acclaimed Los Angeles space that was family owned and operated for nearly thirty-two years. Recognizing the rapid changes of the gallery industry and the modern needs of his clients, Moore decided to pivot the focus of his business from the traditional gallery model to a private agency that would allow for increased project flexibility and individualized consulting.  Mark Moore Fine Art is a progression from Moore’s gallery history, with a similarly ambitious roster of represented artists and activity in the secondary market. With Moore’s broad experience, MMFA provides tailored collection management, consulting, project management, public artwork commissions, exhibition design, and curatorial services with the attentiveness of a small-scale firm.
