Manson’s work stretches the limits of ceramics, challenging preconceived notions regarding fragility. “My work uses ceramics as a metaphor for the individual and societal body,” says Manson. “This sculpture was informed by the process of working with clay, a nature that wants to collapse. For me, ceramics is tied to personal resilience and rebuilding in the face of adversity.” Through hand building and glaze she explores the body’s connective yet testing relationship to landscape. Her work often incorporates tiny porcelain sculptures, each an intimate, bone-like shape, adhered and supported by elaborate systems made of metal and epoxy. Comprised of innumerable parts which on their own may appear insignificant, the structures celebrate the idea that small things together amount to something impactful. Her spherical works serve to memorialize collective consciousness.

Rebecca Manson graduated with a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2011. She received a Windgate Project Grant in 2016 and a Windgate Fellowship Award in 2011 from The Windgate Foundation and the Center for Craft Creativity and Design in Asheville, NC. She served as artist-in-residence at Zentrum Fur Keramik (Berlin, Germany) and California State University (Long Beach, CA). Manson has exhibited at galleries and institutions including Hard and Soft at ACME Gallery, Line Describing a Cone at the Katonah Museum of Art and Fun House at 520 W. 28th by Zaha Hadid Architects. Her first exhibition of public art, “Come Closer and the View Gets Wider”  is currently on display in Tribeca Park in New York City. Manson lives and works in Brooklyn.

For more than twenty years, Newport Beach developer Gerald Buck engaged in an unexpected pastime: building an unparalleled collection of artworks in a wide variety of genres and media.

Initially collecting for pleasure, eventually Mr. Buck realized that he had in fact built something unique: more than thirty-two hundred works, most of which were bought, boxed, and stored away. Many of the works in the collection have not been seen since they were purchased and stored, though Mr. Buck lent works to exhibitions across Southern California. As an autodidact regarding artwork, Mr. Buck focused his attention on his own personal study of the works, the artists, the genres, and their cultural significance. Among his chief desires was that the works be studied and appreciated for their many values.

In order to fulfill that commitment, at his death in 2013 Gerald Buck passed the collection to UCI. We are indeed delighted that we have received this great opportunity. UCI will construct a fitting home for the Buck Collection (and others, centrally The Irvine Museum Collection, gifted to UCI in 2016). Over the next several years, UCI will build the UCI Institute and Museum for California Art, the focus for the exhibition of, and research on, California Art. But we are eager to introduce this great collection to the public. Toward this goal, the Claire Trevor School of the Arts will host the first public exhibition of selected works from the Buck Collection. An accompanying exhibition catalogue with essays by the exhibition curators, Cécile Whiting, Kevin Appel, and Stephen Barker, will be available late in the fall.

The exhibition, sponsored by the UCI Office of the Provost and the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, will be a unique opportunity to see some of the finest art produced in California.

Using a traditional sculptural format (the monument), Meghan Smythe captures contradicting extremes within human gesture: intimacy and brutality, beauty and ugliness, or the lewd and tender. In her attempt to achieve an “elegant vulgarity,” she encapsulates moments that define our mortality in unanticipated ways; oftentimes toeing the delicate line between erotic and macabre tendencies that give way to life, and ultimately death. Glass, ceramic, and concrete are woven together in an elaborate, orgy-like web of body parts and organic artifacts, as if suddenly cast with Pompeii-like circumstances. Like excavated antiquities or fossils, Smythe’s ceramic compositions allude to the cyclical nature of civilization – a dramedy in which all of the players are subject to conquest and demise.

For twenty years, Los Angeles painter Robert Standish had been abstracting reality by altering his own powerful and moving photorealistic paintings of daily life. Seven years ago, Standish shifted away from constructing lifelike replicas of the world, and into an investigation of the unconscious unknown through abstraction. His move into an Abstract Expressionist “wet-on-wet” technique developed in tandem with his interests in cosmology and topography, in addition to psychological theory – namely, Dr. Carl Jung’s notion and analysis of the human psyche.

Now in “Aspect Dawning,” Standish revisits the essential element of his early style of photorealistic painting, namely, a photo reference, but through his more recent lens of abstraction. Fed up with biased news reporting, Standish sources his imagery from top U.S. and world news stories; often selecting photos from the Internet and various social media platforms associated with polarizing content. By unifying his disparate techniques, he gradually manipulates the palette and texture of the original image to change the representation of its featured subject – and subsequently, the viewer’s interpretation of it. Transcendence being a consistent theme of his practice, Standish’s newest work is true to his rejection of the finite, and his proclivity for the universal.

“EDNA is not a long lost relative, or partner, though she is the love of my life.” says artist Joseph Rossano.

“She is also the love of many of our lives: she is, in many ways, our mother earth. “EDNA” is an acronym for environmental DNA (eDNA), the biological trace of organisms that have been present in surrounding water, soil, or air. Instead of finding and capturing organisms in open water, or even a shovelful of earth, then individually extracting their DNA , we can isolate and, en masse, read DNA left behind in the environment itself, using bioinformatics tools to identify the individual organisms from which the DNA was sloughed.”

These works, published in association with Davis Editions, are wonderful examples of the artists best work. Davis Editions uses archival pigment inks and 100% cotton rag paper to create museum-quality prints that are fully archival. Each of these works is a limited edition of just twenty with two artists proofs. Once an edition is sold out, those prints are no longer available. Each print is hand-stamped and numbered on the back by Davis Editions and validated with a certificate of authenticity. The certificate includes pertinent information about the print including publication date, print number, and edition size, and is signed and dated by the publisher.

Rossano continues, “The biological equivalent of the tip of an iceberg, these fragments of being quite literally expose the DNA of previous visitors, extinct or extant, invasive or endemic and their ecological milieus across time. DNA can be extracted from an ice core and used to identify a mastodon as well as the flora (and their pollen) through which it lumbered. These organisms have not lived in this world for 10,000 years and yet their genetic remnants – a record of their individual natural histories – reveal a place in the past that was, previously unrecognizable and unreachable, even while held in one’s hand.”

“My EDNA works pay homage to place. Water, soil and air nurtured the forests from which each artwork is constructed, hosting many increasingly rare species. Reflecting the concept of eDNA, I depict animals that lived in these forests, exposing them on the environment’s salvaged remnants – plywood, cedar, ash, tar and more.”

“EDNA”, as perceived through our five and more senses, is a sampling of organisms and their daily life, imagery, material and place, united in composing a much larger narrative of life – all life.

Joseph Rossano’s exhibition EDNA conveys a deep admiration for nature, science and history. While the interdisciplinary systems of the natural world are highlighted through his works, Rossano’s show serves as a sampling of different organisms and their connections to one another. Through a wide range of materials, Rossano composes a broad narrative that taps into the viewer’s senses and demands a profound consideration for the vastness of life.

The gallery is pleased to announce the Museum of Fine Arts Houston‘s acquisition of “Misfits (Porcelain)“, 2007  – a major oil on canvas painting by artist ALLISON SCHULNIK.

The MFAH is founded on one simple belief: Art is for everyone. The mission of the education department is to offer programs, tours, resources, and materials that teach and engage adults, children, educators, and students in the world of art. The goal is to create experiences that embrace the importance of art and the Museum; to position art and the Museum as a meaningful part of a well-rounded life; and to work with partners who support the community through shared values and interests. Since 1900, when the MFAH opened as an art education project in the public schools, the institution has maintained its mission of bringing art to people wherever they live, play, and learn. This commitment has established the MFAH as A Place for All People, an initiative that began in the 1990s with the support of the Wallace Foundation. It has amassed impressive collections focusing on Contemporary Art, International and Regional Art, and Photography.

Allison Schulnik uses painting, ceramics, and hand-made, traditional animation to choreograph her subjects in compositions that embody a spirit of the macabre, a Shakespearean comedy/tragedy of love, death, and farce.  Her works were compared to  “the comic-grotesque visionary James Ensor” by The New York Times.  

Solo exhibitions include the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT; Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach, CA; Oklahoma City Museum of Art, OK; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, KS; Mark Moore Gallery, Los Angeles; ZieherSmith, New York, NY; and Galeria Javier Lopez & Fer Frances, Madrid.

Schulnik has been making animated films since she was 17.  Her films have been included in internationally renowned festivals and museums including the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, LACMA, Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Animafest Zagreb.  She received “Best Experimental Animation” at the Ottawa International Animation Festival and Special Jury Prize at SXSW FIlm.  Her work is in the permanent collections of over a dozen institutions including LACMA and Museum des Beaux Arts, Montreal.  She lives and works in Sky Valley, CA.
