Andrew Schoultz’s Inaugural L.A. Mural

It is with great excitement that Mark Moore Gallery announces their newest public project: a mural by San Francisco-based artist, Andrew Schoultz.

Known for his large-scale whirlwind frenzy of military horses, flags, tornadoes, seeing eyes, and other imperialistic icons, Schoultz’s mural will be a permanent feature on the west-facing wall of Mark Moore Gallery’s stand-alone building. With solo public murals in cities such as San Francisco, Indonesia, and Toronto, Schoultz is eager to produce his first wall in Los Angeles. Follow Mark Moore Gallery on Facebook and Twitter to stay abreast of his progress, and watch the full transformation unfold…

Christopher Davison’s Dreamy Summer

Master of the painterly subconscious, Christopher Davison, has lined up a full summer of exhibitions and projects that are not to be missed. First up is “CTRL+P” at the Arlington Arts Center (VA),  a group show curated by Kristina Bilonick and Julie Chae that explores the theme of the print. Also featuring Glenn Ligon, E.V. Day, and others, the exhibition is on view from June 22 – September 16, 2012.

Next, Davison will have works at the West Gallery at Purdue University (IN) for “Emerging Drawing: Visionary Works on Paper,” which will remain on view for all of August. Finally, his work will also be featured in “Romanticism III” at Gross McLeaf Gallery (PA) – also opening in August, 2012. Between these three exhibitions, and additional projects on the horizon, Davison will be on nearly national concurrent view throughout the rest of the summer!

The Worldly Adventures of Kiel Johnson and TED

It all started with a conference in Palm Springs in February. Once people found out about his frenetic cardboard cityscapes and boundless energy, gallery artist Kiel Johnson has been invited to trot the globe with TED ever since. Johnson invited conference visitors to paint, build, glue, and light various incarnations of an ever-evolving metropolis – as documented by Theo Jemison’s mini documentary on Vimeo – and as a result, the artist has been invited to stage derivations of his project all around the world with the “Ideas worth spreading” crew.

Following Johnson’s introductory experience at TED Palm Springs, he produced projects for conferences in Santa Monica, USC, and Dubai – where he was also a featured speaker. On September 1, Johnson will orchestrate yet another version of the crafty municipality in Christchurch, New Zealand as part of TED’s “UnContained” event. Lucky for us, Kiel has diligently documented all of his TED travels – summarized for you here in blog photo album format.

Catch Kiel on a TED journey near you! Or at least on the video podcast…

Andrew Schoultz is Off the Wall

Andrew Schoultz is on the road again – this time in Toronto (Canada). Coinciding with “Destroyer,” his two-person exhibition alongside Richard Colman at Cooper Cole Gallery, Schoultz will put the finishing touches on a major public mural right in time for his show’s June 1st opening. Approached by producer and musician Daniel Lanois, Schoultz has been painting his trademark telephone wires, frenetic twisters, charging horses, and all-seeing eyes across the exterior of Lanois’ recording studio – as is highlighted in a recent article by Juxtapoz Magazine.

Schoultz’s exhibition is on view through June 23, 2012, and is not to be missed if you are in the area.

Chad Person Goes to Summercamp

Summer is indeed upon us, and Chad Person is making the most of it. Summercamp ProjectProject (Los Angeles, CA) will be featuring his newest inflatable sculpture, Hero, alongside works by eight other artists in their upcoming exhibition, “Telling the Futures.”

Opening June 3, 5-8pm, “Telling the Futures” is an outdoor group exhibition placing many different future options into relation—a kind of “choose your own adventure” of apocryphal psychic visions of political election cycles for survival in a dystopian utopia. History+Present=Futures. The show is organized by Fatima Hoang, Elonda Billera & Janice Gomez, and remains on view through June 17th, 2012.

If you are unable to get to the opening, the exhibition is also open by appointment. Contact summercampprojectproject@gmail.com for more information.

Allison Schulnik is One Twisted Sister

Following her recent screening at LACMA‘s “Female Surrealist Cinema: Animation” program, and preceding her upcoming solo exhibition, Salty Air at Mark Moore Gallery, Allison Schulnik will have new work on view at Dodge Gallery (NY) starting Saturday, May 19th.

Curated with Janet Phelps, “Twisted Sisters is an exhibition of works that are made by women artists and depict women as the subjects. Inspired by 1960’s performance works wherein women turned to the body as the site of creation and content, the exhibition casts the body as protagonist.” Also featuring works by Marlene Dumas, Julie Heffernan, Kim McCarty, Dana Schutz, and twenty four others,Twisted Sisters is sure to delight through its fantasy and nuance.

The opening reception for this exhibition takes place Saturday, May 19th, 6-8pm; it will remain on view through June 24th, 2012.

David Rathman Sees What Stirs

Opening tonight at Larissa Goldston Gallery‘s new ground-level space in New York City, “Let’s See What Stirs” – a fifth solo show by David Rathman – puts us on the edge of our seat with the danger and vulnerability of the human experience. Hazy watercolor race cars, hockey players, and cowboys epitomize the nostalgia and want for strength and risk in popular masculine culture, and Rathman gives them new vitality through his judicious use of color.

Says the gallery, “For this exhibition, Rathman eschews traditionally recognizable art-historical influences and turns to contemporary culture for source material, appropriating images of events replete with intensity. ‘Let’s See What Stirs’ includes eight watercolors and a 9 -minute film.”

The exhibition remains on view through May 12, 2011. For more information, please visit the exhibition page.

MMG in New York City!

If you’re heading to the Big Apple for the upcoming art fairs, be sure to check out an incredible selection of work from artists Chad Person, Feodor Voronov, Kenichi Yokono, and Yoram Wolberger – all under one roof at Joshua Liner Gallery, and curated by yours truly! As the inaugural bi-coastal exchange between JLG and MMG, Go East explores an array of sociopolitical issues through the varying methods and perspectives of these four emerging artists. Hailing from Los Angeles, Tokyo, San Francisco, and Albuquerque, the artists in Go East address cultural notions of  identity, pop culture, mark-making, and power. Ranging from woodcut, collaged currency, spiraling neon canvases, and life-sized toy sculptures, the studio practice of each artist is as diverse as his concept.

An opening reception for the show will be held April 19th from 6-8pm, and a secondary special event will also coincide with the 2012 Frieze and PULSE art fairs, hosted May 5th, from 7-9pm. Fore more information, visit the exhibition’s website – and be sure to keep an eye out for the second installment, Go West – featuring David Ellis and Kris Kuksi, coming to MMG in July!
