Andrew Schoultz’s Summer Exhibitions

Program artist Andrew Schoultz will have work included in two group exhibitions this summer. Opening on July 12th at Hosfelt Gallery in San Francisco (CA) is “Holding It Together: Collage, Montage, Assemblage,” which also features work by John Ashbery, Rina Banerjee, Joe Brainard, Sarah Cain, Nick Cave, Bruce Conner, Jean Conner, Jay DeFeo, Mathew Hale, Tim Hawkinson, Jess, Matt Lipps, Emil Lukas, Ruth Marten, Vik Muniz, Wangechi Mutu, John O’Reilly, Patricia Piccinini, Liliana Porter, Alan Rath, Ed Ruscha, and William T. Wiley. Says the gallery:

This group exhibition showcases artists whose practice involves combining disparate elements to create a coherent object that takes on a completely different meaning than the sum of its parts. Though collage, montage and assemblage can be used to create abstract work, this exhibition focuses on representation, particularly that dealing with the human body or psychology.

The exhibition will remain on view through August 16, 2014.

Concurrently on the other side of the country, Schoultz will also have work in Joshua Liner Gallery‘s “Summer Mixer,” which runs July 17 – August 27, 2014. For more information about either of these shows, please contact the respective galleries directly.

David Ryan at Morgan Lehman Gallery

Gallery artist David Ryan will be featured in Morgan Lehman’s (NY) upcoming group exhibition, “Conversations,” curated by Sharon Louden. Paired with conceptual artist Jean Shin (who will show with Mark Moore Gallery in February, 2015), David Ryan was selected for his unique ability to engage in a visual discourse with diverse media and artists. Says the gallery:

Sharon Louden has selected five pairings of artists in whose work she sees a unique visual dialogue. Each selected artist was asked to choose an artwork by his or her conversation partner with which he or she wanted to engage. They were challenged to speak and collaborate to create a conversation specific to their aesthetics and the priorities and challenges of their individual processes and motivations. In essence, a collaboration and/or curating process was established between each pairing. All five groups were given no creative restrictions other than prescribed space limitations.

Other featured artist pairings include Timothy Nolan and Cordy Ryman,  Amy Rathbone and Louise Belcourt, Zachary Keeting and Samantha Bittman, and Elizabeth Gilfilen and Laurie Reid.

In addition to the opening reception on July 9, from 6-8pm, there will be a gallery talk on Monday, July 28 from 6-8pm between Sharon Louden and several of the exhibited artists. The discussion will explore Louden’s curatorial choices as well as particulars of each piece and a discovery of each of the artist’s interactions. The exhibition will remain on view through August 22, 2014.

Shaun Gladwell Wins Shirley Hannan National Portrait Prize

It is with great pride that the gallery announces program artist Shaun Gladwells receipt of the 2014 Shirley Hannan National Portrait Prize! Says ArtInfo:

“Gladwell won the $50,000 award with a moving diptych of Aboriginal actor Meyne Wyatt dressed as a Black Digger in Army uniform costume. ‘Portrait of Meyne Wyatt/Black Digger’ was one of 35 finalists selected from almost 200 entries submitted for the award, which is a celebration of realistic portraiture and one of Australia’s best loved and richest portrait prizes.

The Award was judged by Sarah Engledow, a curator at the National Portrait Gallery, who identified Gladwell’s work as ‘the one that sustained my interest, aesthetically and sympathetically. I was moved by the restraint of the work, its gentleness, and the effect of its miniscule differences.’ “

Simultaneously, Gladwell is also the 2014 recipient of the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, a distinction that is considered one of the most important annual surveys of contemporary Australian photographic practice. Established photographers are showcased alongside emerging, resulting in a stunning reflection of contemporary practice that examines diverse themes and approaches. This highly anticipated award, with a total $30,000 in prizes and acquisitions (first prize is $20,000), is a highlight of Gold Coast City Gallery’s exhibition program, and was awarded to Gladwell last month for his work, “The Flying Dutchman in Blue (Coogee 2)” (2013).

We congratulate Shaun on these incredible, distinctive awards.

The artist currently also has work on view in several international locations, including “In the Midst of Breakers” at The Collection Museum (UK) through July 13th, and “Shaun Gladwell: Afghanistan” at the Samstag Museum, University of South Australia, through July 18th. We encourage you to visit these exhibitions.

Penelope Umbrico on “The World Wide Archive”

As crowdsourced imagery from the internet is an increasingly discussed topic in the contemporary art arena, New American Paintings writer Ellen C. Caldwell decided to seek out artists using the technique in interesting or dynamic ways. Alongside painters Gavin Bunner and Dan Gluibizzi, Caldwell included gallery artist Penelope Umbrico – whose practice primarily consists of photography and direct appropriation of such sources. Read how Penelope interprets the nature of “world wide archive” and “collective photography” by clicking here.
