Featured Works: Bob Roberts

The gallery is pleased to present new works by legendary underground artist and tattooer, Bob Roberts. These pieces can be viewed by visiting the gallery’s “Featured Works” page on the website.

Bob Roberts makes intense watercolors on paper – creating dense, fanatically detailed compositions that draw from traditional American tattoo flash, Tibetan thangkas paintings, and outlaw motorcycle imagery. His most recent works are inspired by artists like John Altoon, Phillip Guston, H.C. Westerman, and comic legends Rick Griffin and R. Crumb, as well as surf culture, and classical Chinese and Japanese painting.

His enigmatic icons combine humorous meditations on violence, sexuality, and beauty, and are rendered with a sophisticated mastery of materials. Roberts challenges himself with a system of irreversible marks, as opposed to the corrections and over-painting of Western traditions, but with the simultaneous precision of his tattoo-artist hand. His work was the foundation of the much-acclaimed traveling museum exhibition “Eye Tattooed America” in 1993, and has been featured in numerous shows focused on mark-making and American Pop Culture.

Roberts’ experiences as a musician, biker, and iconoclast flavors his personal work. As a saxophonist, he was part of the milieu of Frank Zappa, in addition to playing with Ruben and the Jets, Hot Tuna, the New York Dolls, and the Offs. He first started professionally tattooing in 1973, while concurrently making his artwork, and is the founder of the famed Spotlight Tattoo in Los Angeles. His paintings have largely enjoyed an underground reputation as a living legend among the international body art community.

Correction: Christopher Russell Acquired by Portland Art Museum (OR)

The gallery is proud to announce the Portland Art Museum‘s acquisition of “Ghost Ship Wreck (1)” (2010) by Christopher Russell for its permanent collection.

The oldest art museum in the Pacific Northwest, the Portland Art Museum was founded in late 1892 when seven leaders from Portland’s business and cultural institutions created the Portland Art Association. The goal of the Association was to create a first-class art museum that would be accessible to all citizens. With more than 42,000 works of art, 121,000 square feet of galleries, and the Northwest Film Center, the Museum provides a comprehensive opportunity to view some of man’s greatest creative achievements. From its earliest days, the Museum has closely followed and supported contemporary art. In 1908, the Museum acquired its first original painting, created by the American Impressionist Childe Hassam in the same year. In 1905 and 1913, exhibitions of avant-garde art were presented at the Museum, including Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase and other momentous works from the controversial 1913 Armory Show in New York.

Dealing less with the supernatural than the psychosomatic, Christopher Russell rouses ghosts. Within his scratched photographs, fractured glass panes, and hazy metallic paints, there are haunting recollections – the kind of outlier memories that plague our psyche well after childhood. Through a purposefully repressive fog, we habitually revisit the monsters of our innermost mentality, and find ourselves the protagonist of a lifelong plight – a cinematic tale evocatively illustrated by Russell’s eerie ships and spectral trees. Like a folkloric odyssey into a cognitive web, his mixed-media works and installations traipse through places of fragility and wistfulness; evidence of the divine and unsettling encounters inherent to our complex mortality.

Russell (b. 1974) received his M.F.A. from the Art Center College of Design (CA). In 2009, he produced a solo exhibition at the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles, CA). He has also been featured in group exhibitions at the Tokyo Institute of Photography (Japan), The Norton Museum (West Palm Beach, FL), Armory Center for the Arts (Los Angeles, CA), White Columns (New York, NY) De Appel Arts Center (Netherlands) Oakland Museum (Oakland, CA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA), among others. He has published numerous critical articles in addition to being a featured subject of positive review by the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Huffington Post, Artillery, Frieze, and ArtForum, among others. Russell is also known for his ‘zine Bedwetter. His first novel is Sniper, and other books include Budget Decadence (2nd Cannons Publications), Pattern Book (Insert Blanc Press) and Landscape (Kolapsomal Press)–which was included in Martin Parr’s The Photobook: A History Volume III (Phaidon). His work is included in the collections of numerous public institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art – University of Oregon, Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Hammer Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, to name a few.

Ryan Wallace at Gerhard Hofland (AM)

Gallery artist Ryan Wallace has a two person show along with Koen Delaere, opening at Gerhard Hofland on November 14th.

For the first time Galerie Gerhard Hofland will bring together the works of Koen Delaere (1970, BE) and Ryan Wallace (1977, USA). This is the third time that Delaere’s paintings have been exhibited in tangent with another abstract artist at Gerhard Hofland, after the French artist Jean-Baptiste Bernadet in 2013 and Daniel Schubert in 2014. This installment brings together two artists that both use abstraction to playfully emphasize layeredness and dynamism at work.

David Maisel at the Kohler Arts Center (WI)

Gallery artist David Maisel is part of Photography and the Scientific Spiritan exhibition currently on display at Kohler Art Center.

The work in this exhibit builds upon the imagery produced by twentieth century photographer Berenice Abbott (1898–1991), who pioneered investigations into the relationship between photography and science. Furthermore, each characterizes invention and imagination in a manner described by Walt Whitman as the “scientific spirit”— an individual’s quality of “holding off, the being sure but not too sure, the willingness to surrender ideas when the evidence is against them.”

The artists included in the exhibition are Berenice Abbott, Brandon Ballengée, Matthew Brandt, Thomas Brennan, Caleb Charland, John Chervinsky, Adam Fuss, David Goldes, Jay Gould, Sharon Harper, Martha Madigan, David Maisel, Chris McCaw, Abelardo Morell, Meghann Riepenhoff , elin O’hara slavick, and Rachel Sussman.

Okay Mountain Acquired by MCA San Diego (CA)

The gallery is thrilled to announce the acquisition of four major Okay Mountain works by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (CA). All four pieces were part of their recent solo show, “Staycation“, at Mark Moore Gallery.

Founded in 1941 as The Art Center in La Jolla, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) has evolved into an organization of national and international renown. The collection includes more than 4,000 works created since 1950, and reflects an artistic program that encourages promising emerging artists and recognizes mid-career artists whose work deserves more visibility. The Museum serves the region as a vital cultural and civic asset, with contemporary art and living artists at its core.

Okay Mountain is a nine member artist collective based in Austin, Texas. Formed in 2006 as an artist-run alternative gallery space, the group has exhibited their drawing, video, sound, and performance projects throughout the United States and in Mexico City, and has been widely recognized for its “inventive construction, loving attention to detail and keen-eyed connoisseurship.” Okay Mountain repackages, reconstitutes, and rekindles our consumerist desires with a sardonic edge. Their installations and multi-media assemblage works mimic the stock vernacular of our communal materialism, yet tweak them just enough to reveal our superficial insecurities and convictions.

Andrew Schoultz Acquired by Crocker Art Museum (CA)

The gallery is thrilled to announce that a major work by Andrew Schoultz “Floating in the Green” (2015), has been acquired by the Crocker Art Museum (CA). The piece is part of Schoultz’s solo exhibition at Mark Moore Gallery, Cyclical Nature, on view through Saturday.

The first public art museum founded in the Western United States, the Crocker Art Museum was established in 1885 and is now one of the leading art museums in California. The Crocker serves as the primary regional resource for the study and appreciation of fine art. The Museum offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions and programs to complement its collections of Californian art, works on paper, European art, international ceramics, photography, Asian art, and African and Oceanic art. The Crocker Art Museum is the only museum in the Sacramento region accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), a recognition given to less than 800 of the nation’s 17,500 museums. AAM accreditation certifies that a museum operates according to standards set forth by the museum profession, manages its collections responsibly, and provides quality service to the public.

Sourcing inspiration from 15th Century German map making and Indian miniature paintings, Andrew Schoultz’s frenetic imagery depicts an ephemeral history bound to repeat itself. In his mixed-media works, notions of war, spirituality and sociopolitical imperialism are reoccurring themes, which shrewdly parallel an equally repetitive contemporary pursuit of accumulation and power. Intricate line work, painting, metal leaf and collage twist and undulate under Schoultz’s meticulous hand, ranging from intimately sized wall works to staggering murals and installations. While his illustrated world seems one of chaos and frenzy, Schoultz also implies a sense of alluring fantasy and whimsy – a crossroads vaguely familiar to the modern world.

Schoultz (b. 1975, WI) received his BFA from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco (CA). He has had solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Copenhagen, Philadelphia, Rotterdam, Boston, London, Portland, Detroit and Milan. He has been included in group exhibitions at the Andy Warhol Museum (PA), Torrance Art Museum (CA), Havana Biennial (Cuba), Hyde Park Arts Center (IL), Laguna Art Museum (CA), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), among others. His work can be seen in the public collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA), Frederick R. Weisman Foundation (CA) and the Progressive Art Collection (OH), in addition to his publicly funded murals in Portland (ME), Jogjakarta (Indonesia) and San Francisco (CA). Schoultz lives and works in Los Angeles (CA).

Floating in the Green

Penelope Umbrico at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LA)

Gallery artist Penelope Umbrico is part of Sun Light / Star Light, a group show at Louisiana Art & Science (LA). Presented in honor of the International Year of Light, Sun Light / Star Light provides a telling glimpse into the ways in which we think about the Sun in terms of its aesthetic, scientific and spiritual dimensions.

Nearly every human civilization has expressed fascination with celestial phenomena, and the Sun in particular. Thought to be about 4.5 billion years old, our Sun is considered relatively young. When viewed from Earth, it appears to be roughly the same size as our planet. Yet it is the most massive object in our solar system. It holds 99.8 percent of our solar system’s mass and is roughly 109 times the diameter of Earth. No wonder we have such boundless curiosity about the Sun, and have expressed our understanding of it in a visual manner since prehistoric times.

The exhibition, which brings together a selection of international artists at the forefront of today’s art scene, features imaginative light sculptures, paintings, and digital works made by: artist duo Caitlind R.C. Brown and Wayne Garrett, Calgary, Canada; Jonathan Feldschuh, New York City; IstadPacini Art Lab (collaborators Christine Istad and Lisa Pacini), Oslo, Norway; Eva Lee, Ridgefield, Connecticut; Taro Shinoda, Tokyo, Japan; and Penelope Umbrico, New York. Also on view is an innovative art video produced by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, presented at the Art & Science Museum as an immersive experience. Brought together, these thought-provoking works of art invite us to contemplate upon the Sun and renew our human relationship with the star we live with.

The exhibition runs October 10, 2015 – January 03, 2016.
