Allison Schulnik Acquired by The Museum of Fine Art Houston

Schulnik_Misfits.141912

The gallery is pleased to announce the Museum of Fine Arts Houston‘s acquisition of “Misfits (Porcelain)“, 2007  – a major oil on canvas painting by artist ALLISON SCHULNIK.

The MFAH is founded on one simple belief: Art is for everyone. The mission of the education department is to offer programs, tours, resources, and materials that teach and engage adults, children, educators, and students in the world of art. The goal is to create experiences that embrace the importance of art and the Museum; to position art and the Museum as a meaningful part of a well-rounded life; and to work with partners who support the community through shared values and interests. Since 1900, when the MFAH opened as an art education project in the public schools, the institution has maintained its mission of bringing art to people wherever they live, play, and learn. This commitment has established the MFAH as A Place for All People, an initiative that began in the 1990s with the support of the Wallace Foundation. It has amassed impressive collections focusing on Contemporary Art, International and Regional Art, and Photography.

Allison Schulnik uses painting, ceramics, and hand-made, traditional animation to choreograph her subjects in compositions that embody a spirit of the macabre, a Shakespearean comedy/tragedy of love, death, and farce.  Her works were compared to  “the comic-grotesque visionary James Ensor” by The New York Times.

Solo exhibitions include the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT; Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach, CA; Oklahoma City Museum of Art, OK; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, KS; Mark Moore Gallery, Los Angeles; ZieherSmith, New York, NY; and Galeria Javier Lopez & Fer Frances, Madrid.

Schulnik has been making animated films since she was 17.  Her films have been included in internationally renowned festivals and museums including the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, LACMA, Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Animafest Zagreb.  She received “Best Experimental Animation” at the Ottawa International Animation Festival and Special Jury Prize at SXSW FIlm.  Her work is in the permanent collections of over a dozen institutions including LACMA and Museum des Beaux Arts, Montreal.  She lives and works in Sky Valley, CA.

We congratulate Allison on this major milestone. For more information about the artist or available works, please email: info@markmooregallery.com

Rebecca Manson, “Cube #2″, 2015,  / 14’’ x 20’’ x 16’’ / Porcelain, glaze, and epoxy

Mark Moore Fine Art Presents An ARTSY Online Exclusive Exhibition by REBECCA MANSON

On View: Through January 12, 2019

This amazing exhibition was just reviewed in WSI Magazine: https://wsimag.com/art/46121-rebecca-manson

Manson’s work stretches the limits of ceramics, challenging preconceived notions regarding fragility. “My work uses ceramics as a metaphor for the individual and societal body,” says Manson. “This sculpture was informed by the process of working with clay, a nature that wants to collapse. For me, ceramics is tied to personal resilience and rebuilding in the face of adversity.” Through hand building and glaze she explores the body’s connective yet testing relationship to landscape. Her work often incorporates tiny porcelain sculptures, each an intimate, bone-like shape, adhered and supported by elaborate systems made of metal and epoxy. Comprised of innumerable parts which on their own may appear insignificant, the structures celebrate the idea that small things together amount to something impactful. Her spherical works serve to memorialize collective consciousness.

Previewed: “School” by JOSEPH ROSSANO

Joseph Rossano, SCHOOL, 2018 / Glass / Dimensions Variable

Check out the video on the upcoming exhibition, SCHOOL, by MMFA artist JOSEPH ROSSANO that will be featured at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma.

The Museum of Glass (MOG) is a 75,000-square-foot art museum in Tacoma, Washington dedicated to the medium of glassSince its founding in 2002, the Museum of Glass has been committed to creating a space for the celebration of the studio glass movement through nurturing artists, implementing education, and encouraging creativity.

Rossano’s work uses the spectacle of art to disarm an audience, opening that audience to truths about man and nature. On the surface, it appears as though he is manufacturing representational art; the hidden reality is quite different. Rossano has made butterflies from fighter aircrafts; used whitewash and tar to tell a story of human behavior refusing to disappear; and employed 800-year-old trees as a historic reference to modern humanity.

Through the use of contextually significant materials, the artist’s work relates an environmental truth hidden in plain sight. Engaging in intensively researched life science theory, Rossano curates a narrative of his own manufacture, which exposes the viewer to that hidden truth and the theory it supports. Through a mutual desire to protect the natural world, he enlists prominent life scientists to, together, lead viewers to poignant, of the moment theories, represented in three dimensions.

Until a recent shift in scale, the vast majority of what he made reflected personal toil, crafted, conceived and researched by his hand and mind alone. No longer pursuing intimate works, Rossano now continues in the same vein with large-scale installations in the homes of U.S. President’s, and more, exposing ever larger audiences to the conceptual matrix surrounding his work and our world. These new works are created in association with other artists, corporations, and individuals, all willing to donate their time and materials to the causes Rossano addresses and messages they deliver – a model of community collaborating for a cause.

The scientist, the environmentalist, and the conservationist constantly face the challenge of convincing an audience to care about their work, cause, etc. Although artists face the same challenges, more often than not, it is an ego driven exercise. Rossano have chosen to make makes things regardless of profit, that are about something bigger than ourselves, , about individuals and creatures—whether they be human or other—that need our help.

Jason Salavon’s “Homage In Between” Dazzles!

Jason Salavon’s Homage in Between (Chicago Art, 20th Century) speaks to Chicago’s grand art and design histories as fluid streams of smaller events. This work was debuted Sept 29, 2018 to a live audience of 32,000 people.

Homage in Between   2018
Single-channel video, 6K resolution
243′ x 557′. 5m35s. Unique

Image archives will be used to create poetic complexes of flowing visual history. Dense, organic matrices of images will flow over the surface of theMART. Reproductions of paintings, illustrations, photographs and other visual ephemera will serve as source particulate in an evocative visual symphony of forms.

This experimental projection-mapped video was commissioned by the Terra Foundation for the inauguration of Art on theMART.

The piece presents 5m35s of neural network-driven video exploring image_categories-as-continuous_spaces.  It begins sampling from Chicago art & design history (O’keeffe, Paschke, Marshall, etc) and ends with internet vernacular (cats, cheeseburgers, celebrity faces). The hope is to synthesize incredible work coming out of AI research into an independent, standalone artwork requiring little explanation.

Please check out this rave review of this exhibition featured in the Los Angeles Times last weekend:

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/reviews/la-et-cm-amy-elkins-orange-coast-college-20181121-story.html

In addition, a very thoughtful and positive review of Amy Elkins’ exhibition appeared in the OC Weekly this week. I’ve attached a PDF of it and a link below:

https://ocweekly.com/amy-elkins-photographs-of-contemporary-masculinity-at-occ-shows-the-new-male-gaze/

Amy Elkins’ first survey of photographs and first solo exhibition in the Western States, approaches various subjects such as male athleticism, whether as dancers or rugby players, as well as men serving life and death row sentences, as a way of exploring the many facets of male identity, masculinity, and vulnerability.

Amy Elkins (b. 1979 Venice, CA) is a photographer currently based in the Greater Los Angeles area.  She received her BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She has been exhibited and published both nationally and internationally, including at The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA; Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, Austria; the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, AZ; the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; North Carolina Museum of Art; Light Work Gallery in Syracuse, Aperture Gallery and Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York, De Soto Gallery in Los Angeles, the Houston Center for Photography in Houston, TX among others. Elkins has been awarded The Lightwork Artist-in-Residence in Syracuse, NY in 2011, the Villa Waldberta International Artist-in-Residence in Munich, Germany in 2012, the Aperture Prize and the Latitude Artist-in-Residence in 2014 and The Peter S. Reed Foundation Grant in 2015.

84f08cc05c861c7b-ScreenShot2018-09-04at101639AM

Elkins’ first book Black is the Day, Black is the Night won the 2017 Lucie Independent Book Award.  It was Shortlisted for the 2017 Mack First Book Award and the 2016 Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation Photobook Prize as well as listed as one of the Best Photobooks of 2016 by TIME, Humble Arts Foundation, Photobook Store Magazine and Photo-Eye among others.

Her work stems out of an exploration of masculinity and male identity often within constructed or impermanent environments.  Elkins’ earlier work, Wallflower (2004-2008), looks into the nuances of gender identity, vulnerability and the female gaze.  She later went on to investigate aspects of male identity and athleticism through projects Elegant Violence (2010),  where she documented young Ivy League rugby players moments after a game and Danseur (2012), looking to young male ballet dancers moments after intensive training.   In 2016 Elkins returned to the Wallflower portrait.  Though unlike the original series, which aimed the lens at cisgender men almost entirely photographed within her personal space, Wallflower II explores a much broader sense of masculine identity- shot in the personal space of strangers in urban and rural Georgia upon first meeting and found through online calls / searches surrounding ideas of masculinity and gender in the American South. The work aims to confront socially constructed ideas and standards surrounding both gender and masculinity, vulnerability and beauty.

The Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion presents transformative experiences through the arts by focusing on contemporary visual culture and creates dynamic programming that inspires interaction and dialogue between artists, students, scholars, and local and international communities, and offers free admission in order to make these experiences accessible for everyone.
