The Critics Are Buzzing About Amy Elkins “Black Is The Day, Black Is The Night”

In “Black is the Day, Black is the Night”, a project that spanned seven years from 2009-2016, Amy Elkins explores how the notion of passing time can affect an individual’s psychology, sense of self, and perception of reality.

What the Critics are saying about Amy Elkins:

“As viewers, we are invited to puzzle over an assortment of clues, including reenactments, exhibits submitted for our considerations, partial evidence, and statements both leading and misleading. The work is elegiac and provocative, asking the viewer to engage above and beyond a simple, cursory viewing of these images.” – Leslie A. Martin, Aperture Foundation

“The degree of isolation her subjects experience is extreme. Of the prisoners that she has written to over the past several years, most have spent over a decade in a solitary 6 x 9 cell. Letters speak of a life where the memories of loss are equaled only by the seemingly endless time before them, unless their sentence is carried out. Elkins lost one of her pen pals in 2009 and another in 2012, whose final appeal was denied by the Supreme Court mere months before his execution. Much like the author Truman Capote’s complex experience in losing the primary source of his artwork when Perry Smith was executed while writing In Cold Blood, Elkins likely cannot help but be affected by the unique dynamic of these relationships to her subjects. Her work seems to reflect her own loss in the mix of theirs.” – Bill Sullivan, American photographer and painter

“Photographer Amy Elkins offers an unflinching contemplation of capital punishment and identity in a culture of mass incarceration.” – Mass Appeal
“Elkins ponders the psychological impact incarceration has on inmates, using blurry and pixelated photos to imagine how life on the inside shapes and distorts an inmates’ perception of reality and awareness.– WIRED Magazine
“Rather than a documentary angle, Elkins has chosen artifacts and scenes that reveal both the preponderance of time on death row (enough time to become a poet, learn calligraphy, read voraciously) and it’s corrosive qualities as it ineffably moves these prisoners toward the end. It’s a tough project, but one that reveals Elkins’ profound sensitivity to the shades of gray in this potentially black-and-white issue.” – Arts and Culture, TX
“Elkins’ imagery of the darkness in the lives and deaths of these men may be morose, but optimism is intrinsic to her determination to see the world from their perspective.” – Artillery Magazine

Opening February 17th, “Revive, Remix, Respond” brings an exciting group of works by contemporary ceramic artists to The Frick Pittsburgh. Curated by Associate Curator of Decorative Arts, Dawn Brean, the exhibition is planned to showcase artists who are breathing new life into the ceramic medium by reinvigorating age-old motifs, processes, and techniques. Twenty artists whose artistic practice is informed by the past were invited to submit work that is inspired by, responds to, or relates to The Frick Pittsburgh’s collection. The selected works, all of which will have distinct connections to our collection, will make for an engaging installation exploring and illuminating the tensions and dualities between past and present.

The assembled artworks feel simultaneously timeless and familiar yet unexpected. The visual vocabulary borrows from the rich artistic heritage of the 2,000-year-old medium while illuminating diverse issues that range from the contemporary (environmentalism, cross cultural exchange), to the personal (memory, collecting), to the aesthetic (pattern, form, abstraction). The international selection of featured artists includes Dirk Staschke, Bouke de Vries, Stephen Bowers, Paul Scott, Caroline Slotte, Chris Antemann, and Evan Hauser, among others. The exhibition will be staged in the French period room at The Frick Art Museum.

On view through March 4, 2018

Black is the Day, Black is the Night is a multi-layered photographic project by artist Amy Elkins (American, born 1979) that explores the psychological effects of long-term solitary confinement. Of the 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States, 100,000 of them are kept in isolation, often for years on end. Because her subjects are physically inaccessible and hidden from view (prisons generally do not allow photography inside), Elkins drew on correspondence with several men living on death row or serving life sentences. In addition to seven photographs from the project, the exhibition includes letters and ephemera written by the incarcerated men over the course of many years.

Elkins blended fact and fantasy to create extensively processed portraits and landscapes that evoke her subjects’ unstable senses of identity, fading memories, and the banal realities of everyday life in prison. The selection on view in this exhibition is drawn from a larger body of work that culminated in a book.

Elkins’s photographs are not an overt indictment of the American criminal justice system, yet in asking us to question the impact of a system designed to be out of sight, she implicates us in a decidedly political act. Elkins does not demand that we empathize with her subjects but instead asks us to pause and question our own stances on the use of capital punishment and solitary confinement before passing judgment on these men and dismissing them from our thoughts.

COLLECTION OF THE CROCKER ART MUSEUM

Mark Moore Fine Art is pleased to announce the acquisition by Crocker Art Museum of TIM BAVINGTON‘s work BNS #1 (Brand New Start) (2016).

The first public art museum founded in the Western United States, the Crocker Art Museum was established in 1885 and is now one of the leading art museums in California. The Crocker serves as the primary regional resource for the study and appreciation of fine art. The Museum offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions and programs to complement its collections of Californian art, works on paper, European art, international ceramics, photography, Asian art, and African and Oceanic art. The Crocker Art Museum is the only museum in the Sacramento region accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), a recognition given to less than 800 of the nation’s 17,500 museums. AAM accreditation certifies that a museum operates according to standards set forth by the museum profession, manages its collections responsibly, and provides quality service to the public.

Music is the genesis of Tim Bavington’s paintings. Through synthetic polymer paint, Bavington acts as a translator between the aural and the visual as he transforms guitar solos, melodies and bass lines into vertical bands of color. Tracks from bands such as The Darkness, Oasis and The Rolling Stones become vibrant bands of color, and bridge compositional concepts between seemingly unlike disciplines. Although Bavington has a method that designates sound to color and composition, the paintings are not literal translations; they remain open to intuition and decision-making, allowing for a distinct artistic presence.

Tim Bavington (b. 1966, England) received his BFA from the Art Center (CA) before making the permanent move to Las Vegas, where he completed his MFA at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (NV). His work is included in the public collections of Fredrick R. Weisman Collection (CA), Crocker Art Museum (CA), Honolulu Art Museum (HI), Albright-Knox Art Gallery (NY), Creative Artists Agency (CA), Joslyn Art Museum (NE), Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (CA), Portland Art Museum (OR), United Talent Agency (CA), Vivendi Universal (CA), Palm Springs Art Museum (CA), Denver Art Museum (CO), The Museum of Modern Art (NY), Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, Utah State University (UT) and the McNay Art Museum (TX). He has exhibited at LeeAhn Gallery (Daegu), Jack Shainman Gallery (NY), Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard (Paris), Space Gallery (London), Museum of Fine Arts (MA), Laguna Art Museum (CA), Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Buenos Aires, and the Texas Fine Arts Center (TX) among others.

Dirk Staschke on view now in “C’est le bouquet!” at the Fondation Bernardaud (Limoges)

6Staschke_Flux8_2017_Cer7amic_32x24x4 copy

Mark Moore Fine Art is proud to announce Portland-based Artist DIRK STASCHKE in “C’est le bouquet!” at the Fondation Bernardaud (Limoges).

Confined for centuries to vase bodies and plate rims, flowers are breaking out from the decorative arts to enrich contemporary art. The Fondation Bernardaud is presenting seventeen international artists, inspired by the floral theme, that have elected to work in ceramics, most of whom have never exhibited in France. The broad spectrum of ideas expressed in these pieces demonstrates that this ancient, timeless theme has an amazing ability to regenerate itself.

In ages past, floral motifs and ceramics were associated with the decorative arts. Prior to the 20th century, the floral subject in sculpture was non-existent. Only recently have artists begun to understand the potential of ceramics as a medium and create works that have made their way into art galleries. C’est le bouquet! explores this new and different relationship, underscoring that the flower has gone from ornamental motif to subject in its own right. Appropriating the rich heritage of ceramics, these artists are inventing new ways of working with the material and overcoming technical difficulties to create on a monumental scale and develop unexpected new textures.

DETAIL IMAGE: Dirk Staschke, “Flux #8”, 2017, Ceramic, 32 x 24 x 4 inches

In all cultures, flowers are present in the transactions between the living and the dead, between humans and divinities, and many different meanings are assigned to them. For the artist, the floral theme offers an inexhaustible repertory to address topical issues, whether defending endangered biodiversity or denouncing forms of domination. Several of the works refer to the grand tradition of 17th-century still-life painting. This is a way for the artists to criticize today’s waste-generating society while claiming the status of “art work” for ceramics. In a day and age when challenges to all forms of authority is giving rise to the rejection of hierarchies and frameworks, ceramic flowers are doing away with the old academic distinctions between “major” arts and decorative arts, between art history and mass culture. Flowers and ceramics may be the ultimate expression of modernity. That’s the message that C’est le bouquet ! is sending us.
