| Mark Moore Fine Art is proud to announce that The Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation has acquired a classic LISA STEFANELLI painting for its permanent collection. Lisa Stefanelli (American, born 1966) is a painter known for her work in hardline, linear abstraction. Her “Melee” series (1998-2015) is associated with her formative years as a competitive figure skater. Made of automotive paint on panel and using a multitude of visual references, the paintings represent a conversation around the artist’s view of our relationships. They display both grace and complexity in their entanglements, trajectories, and occasional estrangements, and attempt to resolve the struggle that they depict and embody. In the 2010s, Stefanelli began a digital practice centered around concepts from the natural world. This work suggests that all human actions have natural origins. “The underlying pursuit of my studio practice is to examine the possibility of being simultaneously involved and uninvolved in the complexity of all of our relationships, both animate and inanimate. Elements of the environments we inhabit—signage, sound/music, advertising, and popular culture (basically the cultural clutter of our lives)—are primary in informing the paths and trajectories of the works’ visual language. The work is elaborate and complicated while concurrently yearning to avoid the entanglements it embodies. And yet there is a joy in the confusion we live in. Lisa Stefanelli is an artist living and working in New York City and Easton, Pennsylvania. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design and received her degree in 1989. She has been a practicing artist for the last three decades. The Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation is dedicated to continuing the legacy and vision of Frederick R. Weisman, an extraordinary entrepreneur, philanthropist, and art collector. In 1982, Frederick R. Weisman purchased the Los Angeles estate to serve as a showcase for his personal collection of 20th-century art. He and his wife, Billie Milam Weisman, an art conservator and curator, worked together to create a unique environment located within the Mediterranean-style villa. The villa was designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann in the late 1920s and exhibits the craftsmanship characteristics of that period, including hand-painted ceilings, stucco details, and wood-inlaid floors. More than four hundred works of art are on display at the Foundation. The collection includes works by European Modernists, including Cezanne, Picasso, and Kandinsky, and Surrealist works by Ernst, Miro, and Magritte. The holdings in postwar art include works by Giacometti, Noguchi, Calder, Rauschenberg, and Johns; Abstract Expressionist paintings by de Kooning, Francis, Still, and Rothko; Color-Field paintings by Frankenthaler, Louis, and Noland; and Pop Art by Warhol, Lichtenstein, Oldenburg, and Rosenquist. Contemporary California works include those by Ruscha and Goode and Super Realist sculptures by Hanson and de Andrea. These holdings are part of a larger collection that Mr. Weisman established as the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation in 1982. |
