SBMA Acquires Penelope Umbrico

We are pleased to announce the Santa Barbara Museum of Art has acquired work by program artist Penelope Umbrico. “Viral Codes / Seasonal (Catalog Jewelry Arrangements)”, nos. 1-7, (1999-2001)″  will make its public debut at SBMA in their upcoming exhibition, “Heavenly Bodies,” which will be on view February 22 – May 25, 2014. This exhibition, drawn mainly from the permanent collection, will draw upon this strength and focus on images of astronomy. Ranging from the 19th century until today, the photographs in “Heavenly Bodies” address the miraculous universe, seen through the ever-changing lens of photography.

“Viral Codes / Seasonal (Catalog Jewelry Arrangements)” are photographs are of found arrangements of jewelry from consumer mail-order catalogs. The colors and compositions are a result of the seasonal marketing strategies used to sell the objects in the catalogs – a visual invasion parallel to seasonal viruses that invade the body.

We congratulate Penelope on this major milestone.
