We are excited to announce the following exhibition at the ORANGE COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART is now on view. Penelope Umbrico: Sunset Portraits from 13,243,857 Sunset Pictures on Flickr 10/8/13, on view now through May 25, 2025, in the Yvonne de C Segerstrom Gallery.

Penelope Umbrico (b. 1957, Philadelphia, PA) uses photo-sharing and consumer-to-consumer websites, mail-order catalogues, and image archives as expansive resources to create installations, video, and digital media works. Sifting through images on the internet using search engines for subjects like TV screens, mirrors, sunsets, and the moon, her work explores the production and consumption of images—and individual and collective identities—with attention to the technologies that both shape and are shaped by these forces.

One of Umbrico’s most iconic works, Sunset Portraits from 13,243,857 Sunset Pictures on Flickr 10/8/13 (2013), is a series of appropriated photographs capturing people standing in front of sunsets, sourced from Flickr (once considered one of the largest photo-sharing websites), a project she began in 2010. At that time, camera technology prioritized exposing for the brightness of the sun, often rendering the individuals in the foreground as silhouettes, thereby erasing the subjectivity of the individual.

Installed at the Avenue of the Arts Gallery at OCMA, Umbrico’s Sunset Portraits contemplates the flood of images in contemporary life while offering a meditation on collective experience through a universal theme. In an era that emphasizes individuality and highlights differences, while often finding conflict in those distinctions, the work presents a strikingly tranquil vision. Like the silhouettes in Umbrico’s work, we find ourselves in a state of solitude while simultaneously sharing in the wonder that unites us all.

🎨 Ken Craft (b. 1967, New Mexico) is a Dallas-based painter who primarily works with oil and watercolor. His art marries representation with conceptual themes, exploring personal and natural history, evolution, and the universal struggles of life. Craft often infuses his pieces with comic book characters and narrative elements, inviting viewers into a rich storytelling experience.

💬 Ken shares, “These works are loosely inspired by a snippet from Dawkins’ book, illustrating the evolution of species through generations—such as female rabbits. Each generation bears resemblance to its predecessors, yet if you trace back far enough, the lineage diverges dramatically.”

Mark Moore Fine Art is proud to announce that the work of DAVID RATHMAN will be included by The Norton Museum of Art in their third unique presentation of Strike Fast, Dance Lightly: Artists on Boxing – a collaborative exhibition presented at the Norton Museum of Art, The FLAG Art Foundation and The Church, Sag Harbor. We are excited about this exhibition as it has the potential to be the largest comprehensive survey of boxing related artworks in over 20 years with over 50 artists, spanning over 100 years.

Strike Fast, Dance Lightly: Artists on Boxing presents a critical look at the sport of boxing through a variety of artistic media. Featuring over 100 artworks spanning from the late 19th century to present day, this dynamic presentation is the largest comprehensive survey of artwork depicting the global sport and its cultural impact. Strike Fast, Dance Lightly illuminates the connections between boxing and artists, and underscores the rich history of a centuries-old sport and its influence on artistic movements.The exhibition showcases artworks that directly reference the sport, and its legends, while presenting artworks that explore nuanced and intimate moments surrounding the fight. Strike Fast Dance Lightly unpacks the rich intersections of art and boxing — locating the work in explorations of spectacle, the body, psychology, storytelling, and politics. The aesthetics of boxing stand in for gestures of power, activism, emotional experience, and the human desire to continue to fight for justice.

Other artists featured in this show in addition to David Rathman include Andres Serrano, Roy Lichtenstein, Jonas Wood, Fletcher Martin, George Wesley Bellows, Daniel Arsham, Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, Samuel Fasso, Caleb Hahne Quintana, Chase Hall, and Jared McGriff, to name but a few.This exhibition was Curated by Arden Sherman, Glenn W. and Cornelia T. DAVID RATHMAN (b. 1958, Choteau, MT) received a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1982. While primarily a painter, Rathman has produced limited edition books and prints, and has created several original films. Recent solo exhibitions include “Somewhere Between,” Weinstein Gallery, Minneapolis, MN; “Up to You, Down to Me,” Morgan Lehman Gallery, New York, NY; “Stand By Your Accidents,” Orlando Museum of Art, Orlando, FL and Rochester Art Center, Rochester, MN; “Hope I’m Never That Wrong Again,” Mark Moore, Culver City, CA; and “Let’s See What Stirs,” Larissa Golden Gallery, New York, NY. GIVE A BEAR HUG TO THE THINGS THAT SCARE YOU THER MOST is a documentary about the artist Heidi Schwegler. Faced with a crisis in her art practice, Schwegler leaves for unfamiliar settings, and begins to see her surroundings in new ways.

Heidi Schwegler explores a wide range of materials in the service of her subject matter. Drawn to the peripheral ruin, she deftly incorporates found objects with traditional craft and sculpture media. “When [an object] is no longer contextualized by function and ownership, the discarded thing’s anonymity and ambiguity render it pervious to the imagination,” she says, approaching such things as a source of investigation. “I consider its formal qualities as raw material – but a very particular raw material that is both new and an indicator of past use, past value and past purpose.”

Schwegler’s accolades include an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission, Hallie Ford Fellowship and two MacDowell Colony Fellowships in the Visual Arts. She was artist-in-residence at MacDowell, Pilchuck, VCCA, Yaddo, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and Bullseye Glass Company, among others. Notable exhibitions of her work include the 2018 Bellevue Art Museum Biennial, Portland2016: A Biennial of Contemporary Art, curated by Michelle Grabner and presented by Disjecta Contemporary Art Center; her 10-year retrospective, Botched Execution, at The Art Gym at Marylhurst University, OR and the Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln, NE. Schwegler holds a BFA from the University of Kansas and MFA from the University of Oregon. She lives and works in Yucca Valley, CA where is the founding director of Yucca Valley Material Lab. where is the founding director of Yucca Valley Material Lab.

Her sculptural work is in the permanent collection of the Portland Art Museum, Laguna Art Museum, Schneider Museum of Art, Crocker Museum, The Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation Collection, and the Hallie Ford Museum.

Digital Capture: Southern California and the Pixel-Based Image World is an ambitious exhibition spanning six decades (1962–2020s) that investigates the history and creative uses of digital imaging technology, from the genesis of digital imaging in Southern California research laboratories during the Cold War and space race of the 1960s to the ubiquity of digital media in our contemporary world. The exhibition and accompanying publication narrate the ideological shifts that occurred as digital technologies were adopted for artistic ends. Conceptually organized into themes exploring issues of agency, representation, culpability, and connection, Digital Capture features more than 40 artists working across several technological, computing, and imaging media.

Umbrico works “within the virtual world of consumer marketing and social media, traveling through the relentless flow of seductive images, objects, and information that surrounds us, searching for decisive moments—but in these worlds, decisive moments are cultural absurdities.”

Umbrico finds these moments in the pages of consumer product mail-order catalogs, travel and leisure brochures; and websites like Craigslist, EBay, and Flickr. Identifying image typologies—candy-colored horizons and sunsets, books used as props—brings the farcical, surreal nature of consumerism to new light.

Penelope Umbrico (born in Philadelphia, 1957) graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, and received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York. She has participated extensively in solo and group exhibitions, including at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York. Umbrico is core faculty in the School of Visual Arts MFA Photography, Video, and Related Media Program. Selected public collections include the Guggenheim Museum (NY), International Center of Photography (NY), McNay Museum of Art (TX), Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), Museum of Contemporary Photography (IL), Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (CA), Museum of Modern Art (NY), and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA), among others. She lives in New York City.

Mark Moore Fine Art is excited to unveil its latest online exhibition, “Allison Schulnik: Rejects, Misfits and their Landscapes – A Career Survey“. This exclusive ARTSY event showcases a curated collection of significant pieces spanning the past two decades of Schulnik’s career.

Allison Schulnik draws on historical images, outsider art traditions and holiday snapshots to construct paintings in which diverse subjects like naval battles, skulls, dying flowers, volcanoes, waterfalls and herds of wild horses become the subject for fantasy and imagination.

Schulnik is the daughter of an architect from the Bronx and a plein air painter from British Columbia, both of whom studied at Pratt Institute in the 1960’s. After studying and performing many forms of dance, including a long period of modern dance with Isaac’s, McCaleb & Dancers, she left San Diego for California Institute of the Arts. Combining the movement of dance with painting, Allison chose to study Experimental Animation and received her BFA in 2000. Her paintings have been exhibited internationally at venues including Mark Moore Gallery, Los Angeles, Black Dragon Society, Los Angeles, Bellwether Gallery, New York, Groeflin Maag Galerie, Basel, The Armory Show, New York, Rokeby Gallery, London, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Santa Monica Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. She has completed two award-winning experimental animated 16mm films that played at many film festivals internationally. Schulnik was just selcted as one of the ONES TO WATCH by ART REVIEW, March 2008 (Issue 20) and was featured in the LA TIMES article that appeared December 2, 2007 on the “45 Painters Under 45 You Should Know” that included both Ali Smith and Allison Schulnik from the Mark Moore Gallery – both artists are featured on the cover of the CALENDAR Section – in which critic Christopher Knight selected both of the artists as part of the impressive and acclaimed core of young artists that “Help Make the L.A. Art Scene”. Allison Schulnik lives and works in Los Angeles.

Schulnik says, “The bulk of my paintings are about love, death and “end of the world” chaos. I see my canvases as a theater stage where a ballet or dance is performed — sometimes choreographed, sometimes free form and spontaneous. The compositions often depict epic scenes — high seas disasters, stampeding horses, fiery eruptions, fantastical dramas and wondrous landscapes, while still attempting to reflect simple, expressive moments amongst creatures, which directly relate to human-like conditions. More recently I have allowed my imagination to revel in its own world — where thickly-sculpted oils, historical fact and blatant fiction collide to form images of tragedy, farce, and raw beauty.”
