Jeffry Mitchell’s primary medium is ceramic and he is well versed in its traditions around the globe (references to Early American glazes, Pennsylvania Dutch pickle jars, asymmetrical Japanese aesthetic decisions and Chinese Foo Dogs abound). Mitchell takes a very direct approach to working, often eschewing refinements that commonly accompany many ceramic processes. The resulting pieces radiate an exuberant, unbridled immediacy. He feels that this unfettered approach is essentially relatable to our shared human experience. To explain this idea Mitchell talks about a fundamental familiarity with clay that we all carry with us from our formative years. Perhaps we came to it through playing as children making mud pies or maybe it was making pinch pots in elementary school, regardless he feels that clay is a material that is universally relatable at a very basic level. The imagery that he uses is also very accessible. Bears, elefants (he prefers ‘f’ to ‘ph’), bunnies and flowers appear over and over in his work and though they can be definitely be related to his own personal story he feels that these too spring from an early and universally familiar place. Throughout the work Mitchell seeks to tap into and broadcast a sense of vitality whether it be joyful or colored with more a complex mix of emotions. This throughline can been seen in the thick, dripping glazes, the unabashed appropriation of decorative motifs and an unmistakeable suffusion of playfulness.

Vernon Fisher is an American artist working in a wide range of media, best known for his skillful combinations and juxtapositions of image and language. In this exclusive ARTSY online exhibition we present seven important works from the artist’s personal collection available now.

The mid-1970s was the period when Vernon Fisher started his artistic career, in the era marked by the legacies of Pop and Conceptual art. This mixture of styles created a unique fusion between painting and installation, in that way shaping new inspiring compositions derived from juxtapositions of language and imagery. Influenced by this period in contemporary art, but also by artists such as Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari, Fisher began creating his multilayered visual narratives. Resulting works – paintings, installations and collages – represent Vernon Fisher’s view on pop culture and contemporary society, enriched with art-historical and literary references. Often contextualized within a postmodernism, his works shares an influential practice of self-appraisal with Cy Twombly and Robert Rauschenberg.

Vernon Fisher was born in 1943 in Fort Worth, Texas. He studied English literature at the Hardin-Simmons University, where he received a BA in 1967. Vernon got his MFA in 1969, from the University of Illinois. As a true Fort Worth child, Fisher was raised and is still living in his hometown, where he enjoys appreciation as one of the Texas’s most internationally recognized artists.

The art of Vernon Fisher is included in the collections of more than 40 museums across the globe, such as the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C., Art Institute of Chicago, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Phoenix Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The most important museum installation is in the collection of the famous Museum of Modern Art in New York.

For twenty years, Los Angeles painter Robert Standish had been abstracting reality by altering his own powerful and moving photorealistic paintings of daily life. Seven years ago, Standish shifted away from constructing lifelike replicas of the world, and into an investigation of the unconscious unknown through abstraction. His move into an Abstract Expressionist “wet-on-wet” technique developed in tandem with his interests in cosmology and topography, in addition to psychological theory – namely, Dr. Carl Jung’s notion and analysis of the human psyche.

In his newest work, Standish revisits the essential element of his early style of photorealistic painting, namely, a photo reference, but through his more recent lens of abstraction. Fed up with biased news reporting, Standish sources his imagery from top U.S. and world news stories; often selecting photos from the Internet and various social media platforms associated with polarizing content. By unifying his disparate techniques, he gradually manipulates the palette and texture of the original image to change the representation of its featured subject – and subsequently, the viewer’s interpretation of it. Transcendence being a consistent theme of his practice, Standish’s newest work is true to his rejection of the finite, and his proclivity for the universal.

Oculus is a generative animation that features the Novartis Pavillon zero-energy media facade in Basel, Switzerland. The Pavillon, built with a unique solar panel technology developed by iart studio, presents an artistic program curated by Martin Furler and Sabine Himmelsbach.

Oculus is a generative abstract animation that responds in real-time to data related to climate change. An algorithm, custom-designed by Studio Daniel Canogar, accesses a number of webpages that monitor different phenomena, including polar ice caps melting, carbon dioxide levels, active fire data and global temperature anomalies. Oculus’ animation references this data through four different versions of color-coded graphics, with a visual vocabulary that artistically reinterprets traditional climate change visualizations.


Thanks to the internet we have a more complete understanding of climate change. The data culled from myriads of data entry points around the planet is giving us a bigger and more detailed picture of what is happening to our global ecosystem; however, the vast amount of information creates representational challenges. Oculus’ algorithmic animation moves beyond the hard numbers and structured graphics of climate-change data, and instead creates a more emotional and sensorial experience of this climate information.

Daniel Canogar (Madrid, 1964) received an M.A. from NYU and the International Center for Photography in 1990. His work as a visual artist focuses on photography, video, and installation art.

Daniel Canogar has created numerous public art pieces, including Waves, a permanent sculptural LED screen for the atrium of 2 Houston Center, Houston; Travesías, a sculptural LED screen commissioned for the atrium of the European Union Council in Brussels during the Spanish Presidency of the European Union in 2010; Constelaciones, the largest photo-mosaic in Europe created for two pedestrian bridges over the Manzanares River, in MRío Park, Madrid; Helix, a permanent LED sculptural screen made for Quantum of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship andClandestinos, a video-projection presented on various emblematic monuments including the Arcos de Lapa in Rio de Janeiro, the Puerta de Alcalá in Madrid and the church of San Pietro in Montorio in Rome.

His recent work includes Storming Times Square, screened on 47 of the LED billboards in Times Square, New York; “Small Data”, a solo exhibition at bitforms, New York, and Max Estrella Gallery in Madrid; “Quadratura”, a solo exhibition at Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Lima; “Vórtices”, an exhibition exploring issues of water and sustainability at the Fundación Canal Isabel II in Madrid;Synaptic Passage, an installation commissioned for the exhibition “Brain: The Inside Story” at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and two installations at the Sundance Film Festival 2011 in Park City, Utah.

In Ekstedt’s latest paintings he depicts human populations as web-like networks of light particles spun over the landscape. In these paintings, clusters of undulating lights populate vast and dramatic terrains that are literally electrified by human habitation. Ekstedt is interested in depicting populations in movement that represent the uncontrolled growth of human habitation on the global landscape. In some of his paintings he depicts masses of people, represented by particles of light, that are engaged in spectacle, celebration, and ritual. Ekstedt has long been intrigued by how networks of lights can physically mark a landscape while at the same time ethereally transcending it, resembling a schematic plan that depicts a kind of celestial order. 

Dennis Ekstedt is an artist who lives and works in Montreal, Canada. He received his Diploma in Fine Arts in 1986 from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver B.C and his M.F.A in 1993 from Concordia University in Montreal. He was the Eastern Canada winner of the RBC Canadian Painting Competition in 2002 and his paintings are included in many international public, corporate and private collections. He has exhibited in Canada, France, and the U.S.

Frederick R. Weisman held an uncompromising belief in the cultural value of art. Laguna Art Museum is pleased to partner with the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation for this special exhibition curated by the Director of the Foundation, Billie Milam Weisman.

In carrying out Mr. Weisman’s intentions, the Foundation continues to collect and make publicly accessible significant works of modern and contemporary art as a means to contribute to the creative and intellectual life of the community. These 30 artworks are a cross-section of works by artists who share attention to black and white—as palate and, in some cases, as theme. This selection demonstrates a diverse array of the artistic approaches, materials, and techniques that Southern California-based artists have deployed over the past half century.

With surgical blades and a meticulous hand, Kim Rugg (b. 1963, Canada) dissects and reassembles newspapers, stamps, comic books, cereal boxes and postage stamps in order to render them conventionally illegible. The front page of the LA Times becomes neatly alphabetized jargon, debunking the illusion of its producers’ authority as much as the message itself. Through her re-appropriation of medium and meaning, she effectively highlights the innately slanted nature of the distribution of information as well as its messengers. Rugg has also created hand-drawn works alongside wallpaper installations, both of which toy with authenticity and falsehood through subtle trompe l’oeil. In her maps, Rugg re-envisions the topography of various states, countries, continents, and even the world without borders, featuring a staggeringly precise hand-drawn layout with only city names and regions as reference points. In own sense of abstracted cartography, Rugg redistributes traditional map colors (or eliminates them entirely) in order to nullify the social preeminence given to constructed territories, and highlight the idea that our attention is manipulated to focus on the powerful few instead of the physical many.
