Working in paint, sculpture, and animation, Allison Schulnik (b. 1978) seamlessly transitions between mediums, imbuing her work with a distinct sensibility that melds theatricality with intense emotional vulnerability. Known for her uncanny approach to traversing the internal and immaterial terrains of nostalgia, childhood memories, and dreams, Schulnik choreographs an honest, complex and contemporary portrait of new motherhood and life seen through the red haze and black silence of the desert. Schulnik lives and works in Sky Valley, CA. 

Her films have been included in internationally renowned festivals and museums including MASS MoCA, the Hammer Museum, LACMA, Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Animafest Zagreb. Caren Furbeyre focuses on the active and thoughtful process of painting. She takes the viewer on a captivating journey, immersing them in a vibrant and colorful garden. Through her skillful brushwork, Caren creates harmonious interactions between paint and color, revealing a transcendent dimension within the tangible world.

Her playful use of paint generates a sense of joy, as shapes and colors flow rhythmically on the canvas. A recurring theme in her work is the lightness of expression and the expansion of space. By employing sweeping brushstrokes and geometric shapes, she imbues the surface with personal sentiments that bring the artwork to life. She meticulously mixes colors to achieve the perfect transparency, density, and character. Diluted layers of paint infuse the canvas with a vibrancy akin to a flourishing garden.

Caren introduces polarities into her art through grids, colors, lines, and fields, playing with transparency and opacity. In her technique of “brushdrawing,” the process of painting adds various qualities such as roundness or flatness, thickness or thinness, ribbons or lines, spirals or flows to the surface. The vitality of the painting emerges through the fluid and graceful movement of the paint. Tensions and culminations give rise to a dynamic interplay, which is ultimately harmonized by the unifying forces of color and transparency. For 20 years, Daniel Duford has woven visual narratives — stories that flow through large paintings, graphic novels, installations, and figurative sculpture. His work is born from the mythic and political history of North America. He is a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow, a 2010 Hallie Ford Fellow and a 2012 Art Matters Grant recipient.

His work has been exhibited nationally including MASS MOCA, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at PSU, Orange County Museum of Art, and the Boise Art Museum. His writing has appeared in Artweek, ART news, High Desert Journal and Parabola among others. In 2011 he published Wellspring: Poems 1996-2006.  His current writing can be found on The Whole Live Animal at: danielduford.substack.com

His curatorial projects include the 2012 exhibition Fighting Men: Leon Golub, Jack Kirby, Peter Voulkos (2012) at the Hoffman Gallery at Lewis and Clark College and An Earth Song, A Body Song: Figures with Landscapes. Works from the Permanent Collection (2020) at Orange County Museum of Art. He is Visiting Professor of Art at Reed College. He is Creative Director of Building Five in Portland, Oregon.
