Prepare for an evening of experimentation and imagination at MCASD’s eXit pARTy series. With hands-on activities, performance art, cocktails, and more, MCASD’s eXit pARTies offer MCASD Members new ways to experience contemporary art.

In anticipation of the Museum’s largest fundraiser, the 2018 Art Auction, you’re invited to join fellow Members and art enthusiasts for a special preview party one week prior to the main event. At eXit pARTy > Up for Auction, guests will enjoy spotlight tours of artworks that will be auctioned off at Art Auction 2018 on March 28. This year’s selection includes works by local favorites and international stars.

Among the works up for auction is the work pictured above by Mark Moore Fine Art artist, Stephanie Washburn.

eXit pARTy > Up for Auction will kick off with a panel discussion called Collecting 101: Living with Art, where you can learn the ins and outs of collecting from the experts.

San Diego-based artist Max Robert Daily will present a special performance of Plaza De Toros and Querencia. In this two-part performance, Daily conjures the image of a bullfight, embodying the personas of both bull and matador. The performance includes participatory elements, and viewers are invited to walk the bullfighting ring.

As an artist working in visual art and performance, Daily’s practice incorporates media ranging from drawing and sculpture to puppetry and mime. He attended the prestigious Cotsen Center for Puppetry at CalArts, and is the proprietor of Oslo, a sardine bar-cum-installation artwork at Bread & Salt in Barrio Logan.

As always, Museum partner A SHIP IN THE WOODS will curate a cutting edge music line-up, and Snake Oil will be on hand with seasonal craft cocktails.

eXit pARTies are free for Members and $25 for non-members.

MMFA Artist AMY ELKINS is currently featured in Aperture  magazine’s “Prison Nation” issue.

Incarceration impacts all of us. “Americans, even those who have never been to a prison or had a relative in prison, need to realize that we are all implicated in a form of governance that uses prison as a solution to many social, economic, and political problems,” the Curator, Nicole Fleetwood, notes. Empathy and political awareness are essential to creating systemic change—and through Aperture magazine, and the accompanying exhibition and public programming, “Prison Nation” may provoke us to see parts of ourselves in the lives of those on the inside.

In “Black is the Day, Black is the Night”, a project that spanned seven years from 2009-2016, Amy Elkins explores how the notion of passing time can affect an individual’s psychology, sense of self, and perception of reality.

Dirk Staschke is best known for his exploration of Dutch Vanitas still life themes in the medium of ceramics. His current body of work explores the space in between sculpture and painting. His work often uses meticulous representation as foil for examining skill and craft.

He received his BFA from the University of Montevallo followed by an MFA from Alfred University and has maintained an ongoing studio practice and extensive exhibition record for the last twenty years. During this time, he has taught at many notable universities, including Alfred University and New York University. His work has been shown internationally and resides in the permanent collections of several museums including the Smithsonian Museum in Washington (DC); Icheon Museum, World Ceramic Center (Gwango-dong) South Korea; Portland Art Museum (OR); Birmingham Museum of Art;  Museum of Fine Arts, Houston;. He has received various artist’s grants including grants from The Virginia Groot Foundation and the Canada Council on the Arts. He Currently resides in Portland Oregon where he is a full time studio artist.

Cut! Paper Play in Contemporary Photography will feature the work of six contemporary photographers whose interaction with paper is an integral part of their practice. Some create paper models with images gleaned from current events, popular magazines, or the internet for the express purpose of photographing them. Others cut, layer, fold, and/or assemble representational photographs to introduce tactile or narrative elements. Cut! provides a contemporary counterpart to Paper Promises: Early American Photography, which outlines the ways in which photography on paper only belatedly came to be popularized in the United States in the mid- to late nineteenth century. Both exhibitions will be on view simultaneously the Center for in Photographs at the Getty Center from February 27 to May 27, 2018.

We are pleased that Christopher Russell’s Explosion #31, which was donated by the Mark & Hilarie Moore Family Collection in 2016 in memory of the Orlando Pulse Night Club Shooting Victims of 6/12/2016, is one of four photographs by the artist that will be featured in Cut! Paper Play in Contemporary Photography.

The results are beautifully made objects that simultaneously expose the crude structures of their creation.The pieces are both a simple exploration of residual forms derived from representation and a question regarding the merits of an Art object.” – Dirk Staschke

Cut! Paper Play in Contemporary Photography will feature the work of six contemporary photographers whose interaction with paper is an integral part of their practice. We are delighted to announce that artists DIRK STASCHKE and ZEMER PELED will be featured in “COLLECT” presented by the Crafts Council to London’s Saatchi Gallery for its 14th edition from 22 – 25 February 2018.

COLLECT brings together 40 galleries from four continents for a celebration of making, extraordinary in both scale and scope. Museum-quality works and installations from hundreds of the most talented makers in the UK, USA, South Korea, Japan, France, Norway, Italy, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden will offer visitors and collectors a multidisciplinary overview of the people, processes, materials and ideas defining international craft in 2018.

Both Staschke and Peled will be featured in association with the The Cynthia Corbett Gallery in London.
